When Stanwood was built, as mentioned before, where wetlands use to be, causing many problems to the local river. The Stilly river is a long and winding river, however, when the wetlands were destroyed it became overwhelmed by the excess water. The Stilly wraps around a small island in Stanwood, called Florence island. When the river would start to flood, all of Florence island become flooded, destroying businesses and homes. People of Stanwood started to look for a solution to their problem, which is when they decided to dig the Hat Slough. The Hat Slough was created so that the excess water had another place to go, hoping to lessen the flooding of the town. As mentioned in the text, today, builders are supposed to create a diversion for water, before it becomes a problem, however, people of Stanwood learned this after they had already seen the effects of their actions. Sadly this water diversion didn 't completely lessen the effects of flooding on Stanwood since the area still experiences it every year. When the slough was created, they made a dike along it to help protect the homes and farmlands. The dike that I visited, is right where the Hat Slough 's fresh water flows into the salt water of the Puget Sound, creating the brackish sea. The part of the dike I visited was built in 1920 to stop the salt water from coming in and destroying crops. As said in the text many floods happen from …show more content…
As we have seen from the text and my cities history, the loss of wetlands caused a chain of events that changed the city. First, the wetlands were filled in, then the river flooded Florence island, then the Hat Slough was made for a diversion, and then the dike from my field trip. If the founders had known the importance of wetlands when they first started settling in this area, they may have made smarter decisions. If you compare the area where the wetland I visited the area where the wetlands were destroyed, one could see a difference. Warm Beach has yet to experience a major flood like the ones in Stanwood, possibly due to the healthy wetland living here. The reason the wetland is important to earth science is because of how many things it affected with it was destroyed. There is always something new to learn about our earth and we should treat it with the respect and understanding it deserves. to be or not to be, that is the
