Stanley Parable Research Paper

The Stanley Parable has an excellent standard engagement curve. For this paper two curves will be talked about. First, the broad engagement curve, where the curve is the title and content is the episodes. This curve is based on discovery. Second, the finer engagement curve, where the curve is the episode and the content of the graphs are the segments. This curve is based on the engagement type of catharsis. Both curves are determined by the tension created in the game, and naturally only works on an audience that enjoys the elements of discovery and catharsis.

The broad engagement curve is the title with the episodes determining the curve. An episode in this game is whenever the game resets or ends, with some exceptions. The discovery element of this game comes from the unexplored choices of the game. The curve’s initial engagement is from the beginning introduction that makes the player begin to think about the story. Then at the end of each episode it becomes more engaging as the player desires to beat the game, find a different ending, or even just trying to figure out the game. The segments are the choices made. The catharsis of this game is the philosophy and possible endings in the game. No singular ending is satisfying as there is a piece of irony, unanswered questions, or some other nagging thought at that ending. This curve’s initial engagement is the player’s anticipation of discovering a new ending or even beating the game. The valley is the choice and the peak of each engagement is the result of the choice made. As more choices are made, the player gets close to discovering the new ending, and thus becomes more engaged as more choices are made.
