"Holes" is a novel about a young boy named Stanley Yelnats and how he survives at Camp Green Lake. Holes was written by Louis Sachar. Stanley changes throughout the book. While Stanley is at Camp Green Lake he faces lots of challenges. These challenges mould and shape Stanley into a stronger person. Stanley goes through physical, emotional and social challenges
A big part of Stanley challenges involves a physical challenge and you can see throughout the book Stanley becomes stronger. For example, at the start of the book Stanley is overweight and weak and when he held the shovel it would cause blisters. "He had blisters on every one of his fingers, and one in the centre of each palm" (p.32). this explains that this is Stanley's first hole and how brutal it is to dig holes all day. Then later on in the book Stanley says "He was a lot stronger than when he first arrived" (p.131). When he moves away from his family and when Zero is missing. At the start of the novel, Stanley writes a letter to his mother explaining what he has done at Camp Green Lake. Stanley lies in the letters about what is going on. (p.46) (p.81). Stanley does this because he doesn't want them to worry about him. Also, further into the book, you can see how much Stanley and Zero have bonded. When Zero runs away Stanley can't stop thinking about him. The image of Zero crawling across the hot dry dirt remained in his head. (p.146). This results in Stanley stealing the water truck to go and look for Zero because he misses him that much. Another example is when he finds Zero and they are on top of the mountain. Stanley lays down, looking at the stars and cannot fall asleep he was too happy. You can see how emotional Stanley becomes by being sent to Camp Green Lake. It forces him to become stronger
