While walking through the Ball State art exhibit, the African section sparked my interest. Just inside of the African exhibit, there was a look book with all of the pieces on display. As I flipped through this book, filled pages covered with beautiful pieces of art large and small representing an entire culture and its progression, one piece stood out from the others. The most prominent piece in this particular section featured in the book was the Standing Female Deity Figure. Because of my curiosity for African culture and its history, I have performed extensive research on this particular topic for a number of other projects in the past. I believe this previous research will be instrumental in the interpretation of the Standing Female Deity Figure as it allows me to have a general background knowledge of the culture from which the figure was created.
When I first approached the figure, I was rather confused and unsure of what the piece as a whole was supposed to represent. After spending a few minutes with the figure as well as reading the descriptive plaque that accompanied it, I began to better understand the figure. When comparing the

I think the piece as a whole was formed to illustrate the idea woman, with her long neck, small face and long, skinny legs. In addition to what is physically depicted, there is also a bit of symbolism included into the figure. As I mentioned earlier, the hands were facing upward on the sculpture. This placement of the hands represents the figure offering itself, or in this case herself, ready to receive sacrificial offerings. In addition, the open hands also represent the the figure’s honesty as well as the sanctification of their faces and bodies. All of these elements contribute to the figure’s overall elevated

Here she is standing five feet tall, with gentle feminine curls cascading down her narrow face and onto her shoulders; so perfectly symmetric it radiates beauty. The hard marble helps to emphasize the strong noble composure that illuminates in her expression yet the slightly off white color further expresses the contrast between purity and strength. The pursed lips, and slightly lifted chin help to express that her eyes are looking across the room and that she is looking down on the passersby thus depicting her true nature as a goddess overlooking everyone from above. The patrons walking through the museum can catch her stare from across the gallery in a simple glance despite her eyes being so marvelously simple as compared to the rest of the statue.…

One example was the picture of Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Seven Year Itch. Unlike the other works of art we looked at, I had some background knowledge about this picture. Having seen the film and others with Monroe, I initially felt very comfortable expressing my view of the picture, mostly in the context of what Monroe was during that era and the scene in the film. Also, given how the demands of her career in Hollywood helped drive her to an early death, there was something nice about seeing her smile, as if it were a moment outside of all the problems her life had. I soon realized that no one else had seen the film or had that background information on Monroe and many took a much harsher star.…

The most fascinating thing about art is the difference and diversity between works of art. The drastic uniqueness of arts between periods is something that is interesting to look at because one gets to see how much changes can be made due to cultural influences and time. After visiting the Met and seeing the works of art in person, I have chosen the Statute of Dionysus Leaning On A Female Figure and the Standing Buddha Offering Protection to explore in depth. The Standing Buddha Offering Protection is an Indian sculpture made during the late 5th century. It is only 85.5cm tall and it is constructed out of red sandstone.…

Female figurines from early human populations, commonly called “Venus Figures”, may tell us much about the roles of women. Two such figures, the Venus of Willendorf and that of Catal Huyuk, show similarities as well as striking differences both visually and contextually. If one examines these similarities and differences between the two, one can understand what the lifestyles were of whoever made these. Physically, there are a few distinct differences between the two statues. The seated woman, dated to 5000 B.C.E., is constructed out of baked clay and sits at eight inches tall.…
