Cadence Mulrooney has struggled with his speech throughout his years, but the education system in Virginia made it easy for him to learn. He was put in an Individualized Education Program to help his education in school. Cadence was able to love school because the teachers worked with him so he wasn’t left behind. One day Cadence’s parents told him they were moving from Virginia to Florida. Cadence being a new resident of Florida thought school would be similar to how they taught him in Virginia. He was sadly mistaken. After enrolling in Florida’s schools he was buried underneath a pile of tests. The “prep” is a Florida Standard Assessment and had caused much controversy in Florida already. Cadence found that “the emphasis on test scores in his class was so intense that, his mom said, it has made him hate going to school…” (Strauss). A couple years ago school used to be a place of earning where every day as a new adventure but now students go to school and they don’t listen or pay attention because they don’t want to. Another long term consequences could be an increase in cheating due to kids trying to get ahead because they feel like they are being set up for failure and want that advantage as well as the added mental concern to do well. Cadence Mulrooney went through this at a very early age but that’s how much this problem has expanded, the problem is affecting third graders!
