Starting with Romeo and Juliet we can begin to tackle how Shakespeare was able to bypass the standards set in his era and express a point of view ahead its time. Romeo and Juliet was originally published in 1597. It is the story of two star crossed lovers who cannot be together due to status of their families. Romeo is from the noble family of the Montagues and Juliet is from the opposing noble family, the Capulets. Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight. The progresses and the two get married in secret through Friar Lawrence. Keep in mind that Juliet is thirteen and Romeo is sixteen. For all these events to be happening at such a young age Juliet is eventually told by her father that she will be marrying Paris, a kinsman of the prince.

Then she wakes up and kills herself also. This play tells the story of love that would never be accepted in normal society during that era. We can begin with the fact that parental consent was needed for hand in marriage especially since they were of nobility. They were also both very young when they which was very rare. Such actions in Shakespeare’s era could be heavily punished. Regardless Shakespeare tells the story of two adolescent lovers who died for each other despite the regulations put on them by their families. Not only that but they are married by a friar, a religious man. There is an interesting dynamic between the fact that a friar married two people of nobility behind the back of their families. Shakespeare is trying to prove that love exists at any age and that it should not be bound by family status. Had they been accepted by their families they wouldn’t have ended up killing themselves. It is going against the concept of an arranged marriage in this time. Shakespeare was breaking the boundaries of love through this play and shedding light on how families and people of different social class and status should ignore those circumstances and love who makes them happy. The image of the person breathing into the night sky is what I feel Shakespeare was able to do for the people of his time. He took the inner most feelings of the people and was able to put it out into the world. The secrets no one ever talked about, Shakespeare would put on
