In the article “Set Your Own Standards”, the author c32pong makes a very effective argument about how standardized test are not successful. The author states these points: standardized test do not measure the knowledge of a student and is an unreliable way of measuring student performances, it creates a grade conscious mindset and it also pressures educators. This article is about how standardized testing is used in many schools and colleges around the United States. Standardized test requires everyone who is participating in the test to answer the same set of inquiries.…
With a growing number of schools are doing what public urging, abandoning test attracts a lot of enthusias all over the world. Even the country, which always implements exam-oriented education, China is no exception. In 2007, a Test Forbidding Crisis had swept Chengdu, Sichuan to stop the increasing burdens from testing. The former governor of Chengdu announced, “Developing education is the root of development to the country rich and people strong, whereas, exam-oriented education’s pressure breached this principle.” Although that revolution failed, it did report on Chinese developing direction and alerted people the failure of formalistic test.…
A common question asked throughout the world is “Are standardized tests a fair assessment and do they really capture the students knowledge on the curriculum?” Well the answer would be no they don’t. On standardized assessments, all students taking the exam answer the same questions under the same conditions and format, usually in multiple-choice format. These tests requires quick answers to exterior questions.…
Could you imagine a world without tests? I know I would love one! Having a world without tests is something I think the majority of students would like to have, but sadly it is not possible. In school we learn a vast amount of material for each class, and there has to be a way for teachers to determine if you know a material or not. If you ask me, I do not like tests, but I do feel it is necessary for schools to have them.…
Imagine being stuck in a bare, silent and chilly room for several hours, nothing but a #2 pencil and a testing booklet to keep you company. This was the reality for many children as, a few days ago, high school students in America sat down to take the PSAT, just one of the many standardized test they will take and have taken throughout their academic careers. A standardized test is a type of test where students are given the same range of questions in similar testing environments in order to judge and compare their scores. Standardized tests are being administered more and more as of late, due to increased funding and acts such as the 2001 No Child Left Behind act which encouraged the use of standardized tests in school. However, there has been much controversy around whether forcing students to take more standardized tests is a good thing, as there is evidence that they are biased, inaccurate, and do the education system more harm than good.…
Standardized Testing Does Not Accurately Represent Educational Quality Standardized tests are tests that are administered by the state and are graded in a consistent or “standard” manner. They are administered in hopes to measure a student's aptitude by assessing how well a student understands a collection of curriculum that the government deems is necessary for all high school students to understand. These tests are administered all across America. Tests such as the ACT and SAT are highly considered by colleges and universities in hopes to increase competition and ensure that only people who are “qualified” are allowed admittance to the school. Standardized tests are, in theory, necessary and beneficial to teachers and students…
Standardized Testing in Schools Standardized testing has been an inevitable part of life for countless Americans, making them question the validity of their life choices since the third grade. When taking standardized tests, one encounters some obvious drawbacks. Any student who has been forced to take one of the hundreds that exist can recount the tales of stress and feelings of inadequacy that linger after every test taken. Standardized testing does not benefit students because it objectifies certain race/ethnic groups, it doesn’t measure the test taker’s mental capacity or progress, and it is not worth the unnecessary problems for students.…
Because of the practicing of standardized tests according to “Bless the tests: Three reasons for standardized testing”, test makers are able to provide people with an “accurate, unfiltered measure of what a student knows” (Churchill). Because they believe this is the most accurate and unfiltered way of measuring what a student knows, advocates believe and support the use of standardized testing in…
A standardized test is any form of test that requires all test takers to answer same questions or a selection of questions from common bake questions. Also, all of the tests are scored in a “standard” or consistent form. Which makes it possible to compare the relative performance from an individual student or a group of students. The test is in a multiple choice format asking different types of questions; such as true-false questions, short-answer questions, essay questions or a mix of all of those questions. The standard test is usually presented by a book of questions and a scantron.…
Use of Standardized Tests in Education “If my future were determined just by my performance on a standardized test, I wouldn’t be here. I can guarantee you that.” A wise statement made by First Lady Michelle Obama on the effectiveness of standardized testing in our nation’s public schools (Last). The current use of such testing in the United States has proven non-beneficial to student education for the long-term in an unsettling amount of ways, including that of its unreliable measurability and general ineffectiveness at measuring individual student performance. Standardized tests are neither fair nor objective.…
Standardized Testing Standardized Testing has been used for over fifty years to determine if students are capable of undertaking the difficulty of college-level courses. The SAT is meant to test a student’s reasoning and critical thinking skills that they have acquired during their secondary education. Standardized testing is currently used for college admissions nationwide. If a student were to receive a low to mediocre score on the SAT, they would automatically be ineligible to meet the standards of such notable university such as Harvard,Yale, Stanford and so on.…
Throughout the United States today, standardized testing stands as an assessment that every child dreads beginning at the third grade and continuing until they are seniors in high school. Nonetheless, what does this test bring for those students? Does it bring unlimited wealth, a respectable future, a hidden treasure? Unfortunately, standardized testing does not bring any of those items, however, it does show teachers what their students are both succeeding in and failing at. When it comes to standardized testing for myself, I am not an enthusiast of it, which is why I have carefully chosen this topic to acquire an additional understanding on why it is required for all students.…
them. It might sound bad but what they do isn’t right ether. ISIS I think has the capability to start another world war and I don’t want that to happen. We need to stop them ASAP or we are going to be in a lot of trouble. My position on this is radical.…
The United States has made standardized testing a major concern across the country. Teachers are now required to prepare students for tests such as the ACT, SAT, KCCT, etc. Students are taught how to take these tests rather than being taught important curriculum that could help them in their futures. Most people don’t see the damage done when students and teachers are preparing for these tests. Students are not becoming more knowledgeable, through these tests, they are learning how to read questions and fill in a bubble based on “the best answer.”…
Standardized tests are not an accurate measure of a student’s academic abilities. Testing can have many different factors that occur, making it quite inaccurate. Education is a fragile matter that must not be taken lightly. Extensive thought should go into making a child’s education as stress free and effective as possible. High-stake and standardized test need to be used with caution and care in the school system because of the many things they do that eventually lead to the harm of student learning.…
