You are in a room sitting at a desk and there is a stack of papers placed before your eyes. Others around you are given the same papers; their eyes stare nervously. These seemingly innocent papers are capable of determining your future and whether you will be considered to qualify for success. Feel the pressure yet? The stacks of papers laid out across the desks are standardized tests. Students all over the world are required to take standardized tests in schools to see how they compare among their peers. Whether it be math, science, reading, or writing, everyone will have to test in these subjects. Not everyone will perform to the required levels of these subjects. And when they do not uphold these expectations, they can feel that they are not good enough, that they should improve. Higher scores on the subject matter show that improvements have been made, but does it really help us find our true talents? There is a lot of focus and time spent to prepare for standardized tests that it does not value what truly matters in education: the ability to spark our passion.

As a result, I am naturally one of the students to finish last, the reason being that I always want to ensure I get the right answer. It causes me to focus intensely on one answer to the point where I would second-guess myself. Second-guessing is bad because I could have gotten the answer right the first time. The questions make me overthink and spend a great deal of time checking the other possible answers. I have always felt terrible for having finished so late compared to others. Oftentimes, I see nearly everyone in the room is done with their papers and they’re just waiting for me. It feels like I’m excluded from the rest of my peers as if I’m being singled
