Standardized Testing What happened to the time when learning was about learning? At what point did the pressure to score well on a test affect a child’s education more than learning? Creativity in education has been eradicated, and kids are feeling more stress than ever before in history to score highly. According to the American Foundation of Suicide in 2003, before the education reform, the suicide rate was only 9.5; however, by 2013 after Common Core was integrated into the school system, and an emphasis on standardized testing was implemented the suicide rate jumped to 10.9 percent. With raging hormones the last thing children should be dealing with is worrying about tests and grades determining their future. Any teacher will say the grade doesn't …show more content…
Every single year admission rates drop for colleges making it more competitive than ever to get into. Also, according to Alliance for Childhood, high stakes testing such as standardized tests, make kids physically sick. Children suffer from increased anxiety, depression, and sleep deprivation that can seriously affect children in the future. Starting from as early as second grades students in America are being ranked and pitted against one another. Throughout childhood children should remember the fun times at the park and playing with friends; they should not remember that they weren’t good enough or they didn’t do as well as another student. As thousands of children in America sit in school gymnasiums frantically rushing through the math section hoping that they will finish, and possibly have time to go back to problems they weren’t sure on, what do those results really show? It does not show what the student’s full potential is. All the tests results show is whether or not the students are good a high stakes fast-takers. Learning is no longer helping future generations become equipped to solve world problems, but instead creating rigid generations lacking creativity and filled with anxiety
