Standardized Test Pros And Cons

A standardized test is any form of an exam that requires every test taker to answer the same questions and that is scored in a consistent manner. Every student during their time in school will eventually take at least one. No student enjoys preparing for these extra tests, and some either will study a lot or none. Each student approach these exams differently. The way the students are taught can be highly influenced by the exam and what the material is. These are just two of many reasons why ever since the creation of the standardized test, there have been people that go against the belief that these accurately show academic ability.

For example, most online colleges along with community and technology colleges don’t require test scores from students in order to be admitted. Some people may counter that the colleges which require scores from students offer a better education and then from that better education receive a job quicker. This may be true as those schools which require standardized test scores are typically state or private schools, therefore offering a more suitable education. However, in contrast, if a student chooses not to take these tests for any reason and aspire to engage in postsecondary education, they are still able to do so with access to online schools, along with community and technology colleges. There are waivers that can reduce or completely eliminate test fees for students who meet the criteria. Standardized tests would obviously not show the educational competence of students if they are simply unable to take the test. The test would also not be a proper representation of the general population of high school students, as there is a portion that is unable to take the administered tests. Having a fair representation of the population is imperative because when high schools are rated, standardized test score averages are taken into consideration.
