Discussion: Standardized Coding Systems Standardized coding systems are frameworks with sets of terminologies which provide descriptions of various clinical judgements that are incorporated in nursing diagnosis (assessment), together with the interventions and outcomes that are related to nursing care documentation. Such standardized nursing language has been an issue of wide debate with some proposing that it should be restricted to certain specialty areas, while others strongly believe that standardized nursing language (SNL) should be implemented across all nursing practice. Tornval, and Jansson (2015) investigated the significance of using standardized terminologies in nursing and concluded that standardized nursing terminology is important to ensure effective measurement, clarification, and understanding of nursing care. Brokel (2010) also pointed out that standardized language increased interoperability and facilitates meaningful exchange of health information within national, statewide, and regional networks. Therefore, standardized nursing terminology fosters effective health information exchange across the nursing, health clinicians, researchers, administrators, educators, and community health continuums thereby enhancing the efficiency of care …show more content…
Thoroddsen, Saranto, Ehrenberg, and Sermeus (2009) stated that despite the existence of many standardized nursing terminologies, its general use in nursing is still lacking which makes access to nursing data an obstacle. Therefore, standardized nursing terminologies should be used across all nursing practices since nurses in all areas are required to describe nursing care to others using a language that is commonly understood. Without it, nurses all over cannot effectively influence policy, establish standards, or secure program funding.
