He knows that the students are not interested in the topic so he approaches them in a way they feel like they are talking to another student. He uses examples of their own lives to maintain the focus of the students. He is also very organized and gives the students quizzes every week so the students can remember what they previously learned. He uses this method a little more strictly during the summer. As the Intro to Teaching book states, “lecture makes it possible for teacher to present information in the least amount of time” (Quinn, Hall, & Gollnick 2014, p. 390). Escalante was rough or harsh at times, but he did it because he cared. In many moments of the film he made rude statements without thinking of the feelings of the students. For example, he tells Angel that he does not want him in his class no more (Menéndez, 1998). Angel was late to the class because he took his grandmother to the doctor (Menéndez, 1998). Mr. Escalante realized later that he was wrong (Menéndez, 1998). He did this about two more times, but later he would recognize what he did and then apologize and show them that he really cared. I also believe he was an astounding teacher for the fact that he dedicated his free time to teach (Menéndez, 1998). He was getting payed less than half the money he was getting payed in his old job and he invested twice the time because he loved it (Menéndez, 1998). He invested so much time teaching that he risked his health just to make sure his students learned (Menéndez, 1998). His main goal was to get those students to pass the AP test and encourage them to get a better future by going to college. Mr. Escalante was such a good teacher that his students made a plaque after they had passed their test (Menéndez, 1998). On the other hand, the group of cholos that Angel was involved with decided to help him tune up Mr. Escalante’s car as a thank you gift (Menéndez, 1998). Mr. Escalante did some mean things throughout the story but just because he cared for the student’s
