Although this might be helpful to some students ; hence, I know many that were left even more confused with movies and videos. Overall I found this book very interesting. It covered a vast majority of topics and was very eye-opening on a lot of issues. Most of these issues happened in the past, but they clearly have affected education throughout the years and will affect education in the future. Many topics are controversial and it is very important to be educated on these so that as educators we can deal with them as they arise. This book did a wonderful job with addressing a lot of those issues, and made myself question if the world could ever go back to the segregated ways it once was.…
The two articles are similar in that they both discuss power. Halasz and Kaufman’s article talks about the theory of cultural capital and symbolic violence. Which emphasizes that those with the most knowledge have the most power. This is similar to Gebhard’s article as the Canadian government were the ones with knowledge and power when they decided to remove Aboriginal peoples from their homes and communities and send them to residential schools. This process of educating Aboriginals according to Euro-Canadian ideals which was discussed in the article is similar to the theory of rationalization and McDonaldization.…

Getting the attention of kindergarteners can be hard sometimes, one way to grab their short attention is by telling them a secret. Every day thousands and thousands of students go to schools, from elementary to secondary to college and to universities. These students are so used to the routine and structure, that many just accept what it is an move on with their daily school routines- not even questioning the purpose or functions of these institutions. This paper will be discussing a recent fifteen hour field experience I participated in which I observed students of diverse socioeconomic groups. I will be discussing how I have a better understanding of how a student’s socioeconomic status influence their behavior and actions in the classroom. Reclaiming Education for All of Us” informs readers about current issues in schools today by gathering information from his own experiences and others to display in his book. Throughout the book Rose talks about politics, culture, race, linguistics, labeling, poverty, school business etc.because they are roles that play in schools. Rose’s style of writing gives the reader the chance to question themselves, the school system and where they stand as a student if they are current students. Lawrence A. Baines thoroughly discussed the elements of finding himself through other men and women he admired in order to benefit himself as a teacher. This may seem useless, obviously he knew himself; however, he did not know himself well enough. Reading through his article, I found many statements and quotes I agree with. Regardless of my detailed opinions, he discusses that through his research, many patterns became apparent, leading him to the four “strongest commonalities.” I greatly enjoy the teacher point of view the reader receives.…
First of, this class and all the readings/videos are truly incredible. I can’t say that enough. I not only love diving into my personal experiences and ideas about privilege, but I love that everyone else in the class is doing the same. We are all starting to understand how we really see the world and the ways in which we see privilege. In regards to the film, The Freedom Writers, it took one person, in this case, a teacher, Erin Gruwell, to stand up to the bureaucracy of the school system and provide students with respect, trust and hope. Though others feel students like the one in classroom 203 should be punished than rewarded. The result of punishing them does not work. Multimillionaire Eugene Lang returned to his old school which was located in a poor neighborhood, he gave the students hope and offered to pay for the college education for anyone who stayed in school and graduated. He also gave the community the support needed for students to do well in school, like tutoring and career counseling.…
Flinn has some pretty incredible things happening in her classroom, and I’m so grateful that I was able to witness them firsthand. This assignment has definitely influenced what I will do (and not do) in my very own classroom someday. To begin, I want my students to play an active role in their entire educational experience.
