After the French and Indian War, the British government was left with a huge debt on their shoulders. And what better way to pay it off then put the burden on the Americans, who were lightly taxed compared to the mainland British.

The Stamp Act required that colonists buy a stamp for every piece of paper they used. Newspapers, wills, licenses, even playing cards had to be stamped. Fallout As soon as Americans got word of the Stamp Act, they were furious. The Stamp Act was especially hated, as newspapers had an incentive to criticize it. Since newspapers had to pay more to make their newspapers, why would they not rally against it? Eventually, after many months the Stamp Act was repealed because of this backlash.
