Jodi Arias Interrogation Summary

Great Essays
Throughout Jodi Arias’ interrogation with Detective Flores, Jodi displayed several obvious signs of deceit – even some pointed out by Flores himself. The most noticeable sign was her stalling mechanisms – it seemed like almost every sentence had one. Her explanations seemed far-fetched and her stories were all over the place. She also exhibited psychological repression – often claiming that she couldn’t remember things.
Stalling Mechanisms
Within the first 20 seconds of video four, Jodi utters her first “umm”. Five seconds later, she used “well” surrounded by long pauses as her next stalling mechanism. Overall, she spoke very slowly, using these stalling mechanisms quite often, as if she were making up the story as she said it. She would often begin a response with a random word, pause, and then restart her response with a completely different word. For example, “I’m…you know, if I did that, I would…” (04:32, video 4). Those random begins, along with the pauses, tells me that she was buying time because she didn’t know what to say. She would also use the word “well” to begin a response as a way of buying time. At the 4:55 mark of the 4th video, she used “well” to begin three straight responses. Each time stretching out the word to buy time or to allow Flores the opportunity

One of the most telling was at the 29:56 mark of video 4: “I don’t know why. I don’t know why he was killed. I don’t know why.” In particular, she seemed to not know much about the photos that were taken while Travis was in the shower. Due to the sheer number of times she uses the phrase when asked about the photos, it’s likely that she repressed the memory of taking them. She used the phrase “I don’t know” nearly 30 times in the two videos. There’s one point (20:07 of video 4) where she stops mid-sentence, says “I don’t know” and the continues on with her thought. In this case, she was using the phrase more as a stalling

Despite Katherine’s belief that her detainment was unconstitutional, her detainment was not a violation of her constitutional rights. She had in fact received her due process by law when her sister Kasey (posing as Katherine) was released on bail for the narcotic’s charge in Trimble County. The main issue of due process is the right of notice of the charge levied against a person (Bohm & Haley, 2018). When Kasey posing as Katherine signed paperwork at the police station and posted bail for the charges levied against her, she received due process. Further, when the officer detained Katherine he was doing so with a facially valid arrest warrant.…
