Mano A Mano Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union for approximately thirty years and in that short time, studies show that he killed upwards of 60 million people (How Many). Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazi party from 1933 until he took his own life in 1945; it is estimated that he took the lives of at least 11 million people (Schwartz). These two powerful political leaders share many comparable traits in their ruthless ways. These men are also vastly different in who they targeted for extermination and their reasons for targeting them. When Stalin was growing up, he caught small pox. It left numerous scars on his face and slightly deformed his left arm. He dealt with ridicule from other kids and felt a continual need to prove himself to others. His father was an alcoholic and beat his son regularly (Joseph Stalin: National). These events formed how Stalin reacted as an adult when people would attempt to intimidate him. Similarly, Adolf was raised dealing with his own difficulties. Hitler’s mother lost three children before him. She distanced herself from young Adolf in fear of losing another one of her children. She idealized the three children she lost which made Hitler feel the need to prove himself to her and the rest of the world (Krepchuk). In their late teens and early twenties, Hitler and Stalin both failed in school. Hitler was a high school drop-out and a failed artist. He attempted to gain admission to an art academy in Vienna, but failed the entrance exam (Biography). Failing to show up for exams, Stalin was expelled from the seminary where he was studying to become a priest (History.com). In the end, both of them felt the need to prove themselves. According to The New York Times, Russia’s president, Putin, has not made it a secret that he wants to restore his country to its rightful place. He has invested a considerable amount of money and energy into creating a strong Russia. He thinks of Western democracies as weak and disorderly. (More of) Putin has been trying to recreate Soviet glory by attacking and intimidating neighboring countries (Putzier). For example, in August 2008, Russia invaded the former soviet republic of Georgia. Georgia sent troops into Southern Ossetia, a neighboring state. Georgia sent them there to fight Russians and other forces that had tried to regain control. Russian moved into Ossetia and took control of Georgian forces by land, sea and air attacks. Georgia called for a cease-fire and Russia accepted. But, Russia wanted them to withdrawal from the SSR and they did. Russia kept troops in Georgia. (Russian Federation) Putin wanted to take control of anyone who did not comply with him. This is why Stalin had a linger lasting effect on the world than Hitler did. However, this is not true. We still see a Nazi movement in Germany today. They are still following the ways of Hitler. This is why Hitler’s actions impacted the world
