Staining Stained Glass

When I signed up to take Stained Glass, I did not know what to expect. I had a vague idea that maybe we would make some glass and solder it together to create a window. I thought it would be an simplistic quick process, but I soon learned that my assumptions were wrong. After finishing my heart, I started to realize that Stained Glass is a very serious and complex artform. However, I did not fully realize the amount of dedication and hard work required to create this art until finishing my first window. Every step of the process pushed me to work, patience ….. I have grown to appreciate and love Stained Glass. There are numerous and very labor intensive steps to create a glass window, much more than I first anticipated. Small details can be added for emphasis and form on a piece of glass using vitreous paint. Vitreous paint is paint made from ground glass that is brown or black and can be added with water to create a fluid substance paint. When using this technique on the group window, I found it hard to trace very exact lines on the glass since the brush had to be kept upright, but I loved the drama it added to the glass once it had been fired in the kiln. Overall, I learned numerous techniques used in Stain Glass to create a window. Stain Glass is much more than just soldering a few pieces of glass together. It is a process in which the artist becomes very attached to their work since the window creates a permanent canvas to express themselves. I have become very fond of Stained Glass and hope to continue to pursue it even as just a hobby. I will forever treasure my first window and will take it with me to college and wherever else I go in the
