Staff Meeting Scenarios

Staff meeting commences at six thirty the first Tuesday of the month. At most occupations, one would spend approximately an hour going through the motions of how the team is doing, and explaining new tactics to improve the company. My staff meeting was interrupted at roughly six forty-five by word of an emergency Cesarean Section to arrive shortly. In a controlled chaos, the surgical team was able to get the necessary supplies, get the room ready, and bring a baby into the world with some help from the labor and delivery floor upstairs. As a physician, you have to be prepared for anything. Fortunately, working as a surgical technologist has taught me to continually adapt.

A mandatory residential team meeting will occur Monday to address the overall functioning of the residential department. We are currently functioning in an overtime and contracted staffing deficit exceeding a combined total of 400k and not to mention that we have 3 months remaining in the 2016 fiscal year. In addition we are dealing with some severe internal issues that are directly related to how we are collectively managing which appears to stem from how we are utilizing staff, enforcing policy and procedures, engaging with staff, enforcing structure, enforcing staff duties, following up with needs and/or the lack thereof. As mentioned back in January we have to implement structure and reiterate expectations before we can anticipate change.…

The teamwork I saw on the ACC unit and during my time at interventional radiology could use some improvement. During my time on the ACC unit on Monday I had completed some of my tasks and was then following my nurse around. I quickly noticed the phone kept ringing, many call lights were going off, and everyone appeared to be very busy. Apparently, several people decided to go on lunch at the same time. The people communicated to their partner they were going but since several people left at the same time it left the floor unprepared.…

I was always aware of how court rooms worked and how judges listened to defenders and made decisions shortly after, therefore, I had assumed that a board of supervisors meeting worked the same way. Although, when I attended the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors, it surprised me how they both were. The meeting started out with a Christian prayer from a reverend and then proceeded with the pledge of allegiance. It shocked me because normally everyone always keeps church separate from the courts and I had considered the board of supervisors a court, so I did not expect something that open. When Chairman Jones started the board meeting by, asking the board members if they had any conflicts of interest, it stuck out the most to show their…

I feel that the preoperative briefing that took place before the patient arrived is what allowed the team to work so well in this emergency case, all of the details that was known about the patient was shared to the entire theatre team, with enough time to be able to prepare and collect all the appropriate equipment that was needed but also equipment that was possibile needed so that all avenues of care was covered and prepared. Bethune (2011) stated that teamwork, communication, and efficiency in the operating theatre is widely recognised to be suboptimal. Poor communication is the single biggest cause of medical error.
