Snapshot Of Grad Admissions: Case Study

The main purpose of the brochures St. Thomas University Residence Dining 2015-2016 and Snapshot of Grad Admissions are aimed to sell products (SERVICES?) to students or parents but, there are so many different aspects to each one. The St. Thomas brochure is designed advertising the different prices, options and rules for the dining residences. Snapshot of Grad Admissions to Princeton University is laid out to get students to apply for different graduate school(???) options and described the different steps needed in order to be accepted. The messages are similar, both for students to take a service from either university, but the layout and the techniques to get your attention are very different. The three main differences the two brochures …show more content…
The St. Thomas brochure has three main images; the campus, dirty dishes with leftover food and logos of the places you can dine with a meal plan. The campus picture serves an important purpose because it allows students to see what the whole campus looks like and therefore grab the reader’s eye before showing them what the food services are like. The next image we see in this brochure is covered with text to essentially use reverse psychology in order to persuade the reader to purchase a dining plan. I think this image of dirty dishes with the text “You don’t have time for this” serves as a really good eye catcher but because these two images are both on the front page, it doesn’t allow them to reach their full potential in pulling the reader in because there is a lot going on with images, text and colors. The final picture inside the St. Thomas brochure is the logos of the places you are able to eat. These include 3 popular logos most people know: Java Moose, Tim Hortons and Subway. The university made a good choice when deciding to include these logos because it will draw people in because they know there are places they would like. Especially if just skimming over the brochure and not taking the time to read everything, these logos are a crucial selling point for this brochure. On the other hand, the Princeton University only has one image- which is on the cover. Since there is only one image it makes it stand out more. The image is of a women holding her books and a laptop case. This is an important image because women wouldn’t have been on a university many years ago. She can serve to show how far women have come today. She can go to school and get an education in order to pursue a career she loves rather than only working in the home, for this reason, I think the image shows an important aspect. By holding the books and laptop case, the second thing this

Deena Prichep’s “A Campus More Colorful Than Reality: Beware That College Brochure”(National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, December 29, 2013) is a small article that shines light on a problem dealing with how College brochures target and sell diversity to attract more students, to seem more diverse and most importantly “miss the mark” on diversity. Prichep talks about how a picture of an African American student by the name of Diallo Shabazz was photoshopped on the cover of an Admissions booklet. “Shabazz remembered seeing a cover shot of students at a football game. But he’d never been to a football game” said Prichep when interviewing Shabazz. The article focuses on whether or not this action taken by hundred of colleges, not only this…

As a high school student, I all too frequently find myself bombarded with emails and postcards detailing the exuberant life of a college campus. Within the last week, I have received an email from Sarah Lawrence College that described their welcoming community and their high rating among the LGBT community, an email from University of Richmond that details their very own internship program, and an email from Soka University that proclaimed their devotion to diversity in all things. They want to sell me their college experience, not a college education. Edmundson’s article is correct in it argument that University education is tainted by consumerism. College has become a playtoy for the rich and smart students that have freely given up the opportunity to learn and excel.…

In the prior reading, Tough explicates that the college conundrum is the increase in college dropouts in America, even when the value of a bachelor degree has skyrocketed, and graduate rates in other countries have dramatically expounded. Throughout the chapter, Tough sought to determine the causes for this complication. From his findings, he was able to uncover the notion of the achievement gap, and its effect on the output for graduates. For instance, he presents this concept in the words of Jeff Nelson, by which he writes, “The average incoming score of our students is hovering around a fourteen, or the tenth percentile …. what I do believe is that ninety percent of the population is reaching a better education than our students have received”…

Sawhill and Owen begin to build their argument with logos appeal using facts, figures, and credible research. Sawhill and Owen effectively persuade students that college is a highly considerable decision by providing detailed graphs and figures describing the estimated higher income and personal advantages with a college degree; however, at the end of the article their attempts subside leaving the ultimate decision up to the students. In their brief, Sawhill and Owen set the stage by stating “there is a significant variation in the return on education. “ (Page 208-209, Para #1) They use the logos appeal to persuade the impending college students by using figures on the greater income one would have if they have a college degree versus a high school diploma. As the brief states “research shows that 23 to 25 year olds with a bachelors’ degree make $12,000 more than high school graduates, but by age 50, the gap has grown to $46,500.”…

Nowadays instead of college strongly promoting their academic programs, they adamantly advertise sport fields, well-appointed dorm rooms, as well as extracurricular and social activities. This shift in collegiate importance, has fed into Edmundson’s conception of students no longer caring for a traditional education that is based upon academics. Universities have now turned to energetic promotional strategies to fill the empty chairs, subsequently leading colleges become a buyer’s market. (Edmundson 396). Edmundson interpreted that this entailed colleges creating a more comfortable and less challenging environment where there is a greater sense of ease and amenity.…

I tried to tackle the college application process as honestly as I could. I knew I was not the smartest or the most talented applicant in a sea filled with thousands of application, but I knew I was unique. There was and still is only 1 me, Brian Bristol, on the entire planet. I used this knowledge to my advantage and did my best to convey my story to each college I applied to. Being transparent throughout the application process is underappreciated among high school students, and the fact that I was able to express myself was looked upon favorably by many colleges.…

The visual enforces the text and the message to the audience. In this picture, the main focus draws the audience to the internal cavity of the decayed bird. The picture is gloomy and morbid especially in the middle, where the audience can see the pieces of trash this animal has eaten. More importantly than the text, this photo sends out an even stronger message to its audience, “that we humans are to blame”, than the text alone would have conveyed. Even though the text doesn’t show where this is specifically happening, it still communicates to the audience that this is a real problem.…
