The Disney movie Pocahontas offers the viewer a stark portrayal of how Englishmen viewed Indigenous American tribes upon their arrival to the United States. The movie features a song titled Savages where Pocahontas and her fellow Powhatan tribespeople are described by the English settlers as “barely even human” and “dirty shrieking devils”. In reality, the first European explorers had much more diverse accounts of their experiences with indigenous peoples in North and Central America. To accurately evaluate early settlers interactions with American tribespeople, the works of Christopher Columbus, Cabeza de Vaca, and John Smith will be examined. In the words of Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, “Country is the new rock ‘n’ roll. There’s no (radio) format (for rock); no one is playing it” (Ruggieri 2016).…

In 2003, Andre Thomas viciously attacked and killed his ex-wife and her two children, and was sentenced to death row. His defense argued that he was not eligible for death row because of his mental state. The court ignored the argument and passed it off, saying that they were using his illness as an excuse to “get out of” maximum punishment. On January 17th, St. Martinville, Louisiana’s 3rd oldest town, celebrated its bicentennial, beginning a yearlong commemoration of the small city’s storied history. St. Martinville is representative of many of Louisiana’s distinct cultural and geographic histories. Seated on the Bayou Teche, the water highway of over 100 miles has been an essential part of the settlement and commercial development of St. Martinville. The word “teche” may be derived from the Chitimacha word for “snake”, and some say the Great River will one day avenge the serpent. The term recalls the pre-colonial history of the land, where near present-day city limits there was an Attakapas Indian settlement.…

A second instance where dialogue was brilliantly portrayed was on page 392, where the paragraph began with “Victor knew… Thomas would remain the crazy storyteller who talked to dogs and cars.” What was poignant here was the untouched friendship Victor and Thomas left years ago. Thomas’ desire to go and bury half of his Father’s ashes shows his care and concern for his Father and his knowledge of what is best for his friend. True friendships can pick up wherever they left off and true friends never stop showing compassion for former friends, which is exactly what Thomas demonstrated in this passage.…
