1) There are many ways that St. Alexis and St. Severinus are similar, but the most obvious one is that they both were recognized by the leaders of the time. On page 7 of the handout on Severinus, one can read how the King of the Rugii asked for advice on his reign. Similarly, on pg. 9 of the handout on St. Alexis one reads how the Pope and the emperor asked him for counsel as well. Another thing they have on common is that they both have miracles that are attributed to them after their death. You can see this at the end of the St. Severinus on page 20. This is also shown on page 15 when it says how no one who went to his body ever came left without being cured. 2) While they have many similarities, there are also many differences between St. Alexis and St. Severinus. This would have been valued because at the time the church was in reform and wanted to make it no longer oppressive to the poor. (pg.165 Rosenwein) They were beginning to expect member of the church to embrace the idea of being poor (pg. 184-186 Rosenwein) Him giving up his wealth to the poor would have been seen as the exact image the church was striving to achieve. Another major difference was Alexis`s history. Before he left his family, he was married. This was starting to be seen as an issue and those with wives and sons were seen as not as pure as those without. The fact that Alexis saw that laying with his wife as sin and was troubled by the idea that he would anger God shows how this view was prevalent. This combined with him leaving his wife to live his life for God shows how people believed that wives and children were a hindrance to the clergy. This is shown to be true on pages 170 and pg.165 of
