I have always loved these doors. I think they are a fun example of late Medieval art trying to revive an old tradition. They are impressively large like many artworks of the Roman period, but the craftsmenship still shows the artist is squarly in the Medieval tradition of depicting people and buildings without regards to perspective and proportion. Bishop Bernward had traveled to Rome and saw a set of wooden doors at St. Sabina, which date to ca. 430-32. These were the inspirations for these bronzes doors.
