St Paul Reflection

Decent Essays
This last summer I traveled to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and worked in a home that was non profit and dedicated to keeping children for up to three days at a time to allow parents to work and not have to hire a baby sitter. I prepared meals and fed two significant groups of younger children facing allergies, and preferences. I could not have had a better experience with these children, and growing up in a rural Iowa community I was overjoyed to spend a day with people of a different culture and learn about their background and the struggles they face in every day

I have volunteered for the BPSOS health fair each October for the past three years. The BPSOS (Boat People SOS) is a nonprofit organization focused on helping refugees. This organization sponsors free health fairs held in Norcross, GA with many health services for anyone who stops by. The services include influenza vaccines, various types of screenings, and physical exams. I volunteered with doctors and nurse practitioners at the bone-density screening booth, where I helped with the screening of osteoporosis for the underserved population.…

For my service project, my group went to the DC Diaper Bank to learn about the existing problems that many low-income families face, as well as to assist the drive in any way we could. When we first got there, we watched an introductory video that informed us about just how much support families in the area need. I was stunned to learn that forty-four percent of children under that age of three live in low-income families in the DC area. The parents of those children are struggling financially to make ends meet, and individuals in the community felt compelled and created the DC Diaper Bank. The video also informed us that babies who do not have clean diapers are more likely to cry more, which has an extremely negative impact on the development of their body and minds.…

I have never been one to spring at opportunities that involved working with kids simply because I was disinterested. In the summer of 2015, my disinterest was turned into a passion when I met the children from Broadlawn. Broadlawn is a public housing community in my city and my church wanted to intercede and help their community. Our church decided that every Tuesday throughout the summer we would go out to Broadlawn to eat, talk, and play with the kids from the neighborhood. After some nagging from friends and family, I decided to tag along one Tuesday to help.…

I saw the relief and gratitude on the faces of the parents who dropped their children off. Not only did these parents know their children were in good hands and receiving help and support that they needed, but the parents themselves felt the support. The center near my home in which I volunteered has been providing a growing variety of services to families for 50 years. This center not only offers Head Start programs in 12 locations around my area, but also offers additional services to families such as family wellness services, mental health services, nutritional services and transportation services. So once families get "plugged in" to this center, they have access to numerous supportive services.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

While I have not had nearly as many hardships in my life as Jeannette Walls in her book The Glass Castle, there are still some things that her and I have in common. Throughout the book, Walls endured many struggles while traveling with her dysfunctional family. Jeannette’s father is constantly getting in the way of her success, from stealing her money to not always making her go to school. Eventually, she leaves her parents behind and makes her way to New York City, where she goes to college and finds success. Similar to how Jeannette had to overcome the obstacles between her and her success, her parents in The Glass Castle, I had to overcome the obstacle between me and my success, my bones.…

When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…

Growing up, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to doing something special in life. I was born in a village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. I recall, one day, accompanying my mother to a ladies house where there was a sick child. My mother was one of the women in the village who would take care of the sick; she learned everything she knew from my grandmother. When we got there, I saw my mother prepare some medicine and giving it to the ill child.…

I volunteer in the maternity concierge of Mission Hospital, where I am part of the Baby’s First Ride program. Essentially, I am responsible for making cribs for babies, rooms for mothers, and best of all discharging mothers and babies from the hospital. When families are ready to go home I am one of the lucky few who get to wheel them outside. I also make rounds in the ward offering water and asking if any if the parents need anything or running any errands for the nurses. Medicine fascinated me even when I was a child. I remember being about eight years old when my pediatrician asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Without hesitation, I told him I wanted to be a doctor. I view medicine as discovery, the chance to learn the science surrounding the human body and develop the skills that will allow me to heal others. As I entered college, I pursued experiences that exposed me to the world of medicine, becoming more involved within my community and university.…

In the year of 2014, I decided to be delivered from all old things and become one with a man who is above all. I didn’t accept change to have a title, or become famous, or get a place in a building. I changed because, I wanted a deeper revelation, a greater impartation, and a clear manifestation of who God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit is. For the bible tells me that there is important work to be done in the Kingdom and only a few are able to do it. My first step was to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.…
