St. Patrick Informative Speech Essay

Improved Essays
We all come from different backgrounds and places. On March 15, 2017, I attended a speaker I thought would help me gain better knowledge on my Irish heritage. Professor Fredrick Suppe, of Ball State University, gave a forty-five-minute speech on the history of St. Patrick. He gave this informative speech at Bracken Library in room 104. The general purpose of his speech was to inform. We know this because he wanted to inform us on the history of St. Patrick and St. Patrick’s Day. During the speech, he spent the first thirty minutes discussing the life of St. Patrick and his journeys. Some of these include, when he was taken to Ireland at the age of sixteen, the meaning behind the clover and how he used it to show God the Father, God the Son, …show more content…
Therefore, the central message of this speech was to inform an audience on a part of history that is unclear to many people. Many think that St. Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate Irish Heritage. They are not wrong, but he wanted his audience to understand from whom they were really celebrating. He made this message indefinable within the introduction saying, “Many people do not know much information about St. Patrick.” The central message was able to be seen because he was very clear when speaking and made sure the audience understood each detail (Q2). The way I know he had clarity within the central message was how he made his speech audience-centered. We know this because throughout the speech he would try to put us in the shoes of St. Patrick. Telling us to imagine we are sixteen and being taking to a place where we could not even understand the language. He also made sure to explain everything to the audience as if they had no knowledge of the topic he brought up. For example, he talked about Christianity and explained they believe in one god who is all merciful and forgiving. This allows those who know nothing about Christianity to understand the concept of their religion

In others he was able to invoke both feelings of fear and resentment towards the British, and feelings of patriotism and power. He also, through his multiple mentions of God, was able to gain the favor of the council, making himself relatable and worthy of their trust. Patrick Henry’s speech doubtlessly influenced the conclusion reached at the Virginia Convention, which was certainly a decision that shaped the world we live in…
