Melangell, patron saint of hares, rabbits, small animals, and natural environment, was born sometime near the late sixth century to an Irish king. After she had grown into a young woman, her father decided that she would be married to a nobleman. She fled to the Tanat Valley in Wales to escape marriage and became a hermitess. She lived in the valley for approximately fifteen years before being discovered by a hunter by the name of Brochfael, Prince of Powys. The prince had been hunting with his hounds when a startled hare caught their attention and they began to chase is.
