Since 1986, St. Mary’s University (formerly known as St. Mary’s University College) has been providing quality post secondary education to Calgary and area. St. Mary’s University has sought to provide a strong liberal arts education rooted in traditional catholic values, with emphasis on small class sizes to allow for an in-depth education; this establishes significant relationships among the students, and between students and their professors. As St. Mary’s has grown over the years, more and more degree programs and education opportunities have allowed the institution to grow to its current size and strength. Before we describe the position we are hiring for, we believe it important to describe the need for such a role. While universities, and their residences, have been around for hundreds of years, there has been an increased demand for residence life professionals and programs. When looking at the statistics behind student well-being and university housing, it has been widely acknowledged that there is a high number of students dropping out of post secondary education, experiencing a greater risk of depression, and unfortunately a high rate of suicide. And while Universities have hired mental health and medical professionals, there is still a lack of significant progress towards the aforementioned issues. Residence life and student housing is an emerging field within academia that has risen to the challenges of student dropout rates, mental health issues, and in particular suicide rates. Through the application of the growing literature surrounding student development theory, residents are provided with opportunity to develop additional soft skills, life skills, and have a more holistic student experience. By providing students with not only a residence to live in, but also residence life programming and health monitoring, this emerging field has been able to effectively reduce these
