SWOT analysis is a strategic tool used by management to determine an organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in order to create future plans or resolve problems. It provides an opportunity for internal and external brainstorming. SWOT analysis is one of the most commonly used tool in strategic analysis and other evaluative studies (Al-Araki, 2013). The analysis is most effective if a specific goal is determined prior to attempting to begin the process. As such, St. Mark’s Hospital identified three goals to achieve for the next fiscal year in strategic planning and organizational development are: 1) utilize social media to its fullest potential, 2) continue to optimize the Epic electronic medical record (EMR), and 3) …show more content…
These factors are positive external factors out of the organizations control, which indicate the potential and probability to perform successfully. 1) The more “likes”, “hashtags”, and followers, the more opportunities to attract new patrons; free advertising. 2) St. Mark’s Hospital is one of three facilities within the HCA Corporation that uses the Epic EMR. As such, there is a possibility that the other facilities have the same problems and may create a higher demand for solutions and attention. 3) Due to the near-end of the fiscal year, many other organizations are not making drastic wage increases or hiring. Similar to opportunities, threats are not controlled. 1) Social media may be a helpful tool, but can also be a destructive avenue for people to post negative reviews. There have been many instances, at St. Mark’s Hospital, that the Marketing Director forwarded a patient complaint/negative comment from Facebook to the Risk Management Department. 2) The Epic EMR is only as good as it is built by analysts and HCA corporate office analysts. Technology is very valuable and beneficial, but there are valid threats of overall downtime that is unforeseeable and unpredictable. There have been instances at St. Mark’s Hospital that the entire Epic EMR shuts down and clinicians must use paper charting and paper forms. 3) Negative word-of-mouth reviews, bad media coverage, and judgements by the general public affect and influence people from applying for open
