St Lucy's By Claudette Analysis

Russell establishes Claudette's sad tone in this excerpt. Analogous to her earlier portrayal of the ball, Claudette carries on to use phrases that describe how frightened she was during the ball. She chronicles herself as a "terrified animal" after Kyle pushes her into the spotlight. Although the overall tone is dismal, Claudette also has a banterous tone toward some of her retrospection from the dance. For example, Claudette recalls one of the nuns saying, "'The Sausalito … does not in any way resemble the thing that you are doing'" when she starts pumping rather than dancing. Russell establishes Claudette's remorseful tone when Mirabella was expelled from St. Lucy's. Claudette admits she had "never loved someone so much" as she did when Mirabella

The Treasure of the City of Ladies showed the importance of having a strong female with a male who has power and it was a guide for women to lead virtuous lives. Christine de Pizan states “the princess many be the best means to placate the man” (35). The princess would have access and easier time calming down the prince rather than an advisor or man of power. The woman can also be the go-between for the people and her husband which gives her great power if she chooses to use it. Circumstances can be used for one's benefit or failure. They can shape a person into a wiser and refined person, or they can crush one's character and soul. St. Claire and Legree from Uncle Tom's Cabin are examples of such a case. How are they extremely contradictory yet so similar? Not only do both of them have similar beginnings alongside being slave masters, they develop into almost complete and utter opposites.…

Even though half a century separates Alexis de Tocqueville from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, both theorists share similar views on several topics including the foundation of a regime, the organization of a political power and its exercise. Tocqueville can be read in a continuity from Rousseau's ideals. In the The Social Contract (1762), Rousseau proposes a model of society where men consent to obligations in exchange for peace and security. Through this contract, citizens acquire a stable representative government. Rousseau had the Republic of Geneva strongly in mind but he marks a breakthrough by creating a utopian society to inspire future lawmakers and statesmen.…

The differences between Shirley’s and Villette’s approach to women’s roles in the church are slight but evident. Shirley proposes that women bond together and make their own decisions, defying the societal norm. This ideology is evident when Shirley and Caroline skip a Sunday church service to lie outside in nature, directly beside the church, as previously mentioned. This vivid picture could be seen as Bronte juxtaposing traditional religion with a new, freer religion, one dictated by seeing God in one’s own life and in nature, the very concepts that Caroline and Shirley contemplate while lying outside the church. Villette’s solution is different.…

She had to have someone go with her to help her find her way back. Another piece of evidence that shows Claudette has conformed is found on Page 246 (Stage 5), “My mother recoiled from me, as if I was a stranger. TRRR? She sniffed me for a long moment.” This is another example of proof that Claudette has truly conformed.…

Alexis de Tocqueville was a prominent 19th century thinker in French political philosophy. After having witnessed a failed attempt to establish democratic government at home in France, he became interested in studying what he thought was a successful and fluorishing democracy to understand how the system works. This is how Democracy in America came to be. He anticipates a global movement toward democracy and equality, after it had progressed farthest in America at his time and became an unstoppable movement in the years that followed. Lucy’s mother writes a letter to Mrs. Vyse, Cecil’s mother. Lucy does not seem so sure about the engagement and her mother believes she should make her own choice. Her belief relates to contemporary society because girls and women are encouraged to think and speak for themselves today. She could have arranged the marriage between Lucy and Cecil, but she valued Lucy’s feelings and independence over her own wishes. This part of the story stands out to me.…

Simon De Beauvoir, for quite some time, was hesitant to write a book about women, because it is an irritating subject that has been a major topic of discussion for years. Half a century ago, she wrote the “Second Sex”, and here we are all these years later, and still, women are not free and equal. She famously asserts in her book that woman is other; woman is not man, and that man has historically found what it means to be human. Women are faced to live with the reality of gender oppression. Women have to assert their freedom, and climb social ladders, as opposed to men who have it much simpler.…

For the purpose of this essay I am going to discuss the Novella ‘Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorf’ by Gottfried Keller. “Romeo and Juliet in the village" is similar to Shakespeare's play. The plot was, however, transferred to the rural milieu of the 19th century. In the novella, there are children of peasant families, Sali and Vrenchen, who fall in love with each other. The fathers of the children are enemies because of a dispute over Land.…
