St. Louis Zooalive: Community Service

Decent Essays
The main community service activity that I'm involved in is ZooALIVE. ZooALIVE is a volunteer program at the St. Louis Zoo for high school students. As a volunteer with ZooALIVE, I help assist staff in the education department. This includes helping at the Zoo's summer camp, Camp KangaZoo, assisting the Zoo with their conservation programs, helping at outreach programs, birthdays, early childhood classes, and much more.
The ZooALIVE program allows me to educate my local community about animals at the zoo, the biodiversity of the world, and the conservation efforts they can make to better the planet. Not only am I able to educate others about wildlife and conservation, but I'm also able to educate myself and explore my interest.

The first one, Furry Friends, was significant because I was able to gather and purchase goods and necessary items that a pet shelter needs on a daily basis. I devoted myself to being a key part of the interact club. I participated in events such as volunteering in local soup kitchens, Spicket River cleanup, earth day and helping to pick up trash around the city of Lawrence. After I saw what a difference I could make by just simply helping my community through the school, I decided to do some community service on my own. Following my trade area I went on to volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital. Throughout my time there, my eyes were opened even more as to what a change one can simply make by dedicating one's time to others.…

A trip to the zoo is always enlightening as no matter how long ago it was we last visited we can always forget something about the animals that live this world with us. Going to the zoo can remind us that we are creatures just like these animals, but also remind us that we are so much more than just animals. Our lives on the surface seem so much more complex than the primates around us, however if we could take the time to observe the lives and the emotions of the animals around us then maybe we can learn who they are, and maybe who we are. The primate that I picked was a mongooses lemur, native to Madagascar.…
