John the baptist was born in the late first century near Judea into a religious family (www.Biography.com). His father, Zacharias, was a priest, and his mother, Elizabeth, was the cousin of the first and greatest disciple, Mary. When John was born, he was expected to be a priest just like his father, but instead accepted the call to being a baptist. John began preaching about the coming of a figure of judgement and restoration on the banks of the jordan river (Webb 27), drawing much attention and many new disciples to Christ.
