Although St. Francis is commonly known as the Patron Saint of nature and animals, his true legacy is the founding of the Franciscan Order, which thrives to this day. Francis was born to a wealthy merchant family in Italy around 1181. (Padre.) When he was old enough, he went to fight in a battle between his hometown, Assisi, and neighboring town, Perugia. After the battle he was captured and arrested. He spent almost a year in prison, and during that time he patiently waited for his release. Many people avoided these, but Francis went to give them his help. He preached Christ’s message of repentance and loving one another to every person he met. Francis heard Christ speak to him three times saying, “Francis, go and repair My house, which you see is falling down.” (We.)
