The order was originally established as hospital fraternity by Agnes the Přemyslid in 1233. The fraternity promoted to the order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star in 1237. The monastery with a hospital was built close to the church of St. Francis of Assisi in 1252 where the Knights of the Cross settled down.. The monastery was located near the Judith Bridge which resulted in many duties for them. Besides they had to take care of the bridge they were obliged to levy customs and toll. The monastery was in its history several times rebuilt and reconstructed. It was badly damaged due to the siege of Prague by the Swedish troops in the 17th century yet due to work of C. Lurago, F.D. Orsi and also K.I. Dientzenhofer it was rebuilt again. It is interesting to know that there is a remain of the bridge tower of the former Judith
