Many people have influencers, whether it be your favourite soccer player or your older siblings, but none of them can compare to the influence of St Francis of Assisi. This influencer was an Italian religious preacher and leader who was born on the c. 1182 Assisi, Umbria, Italy. St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals & the environment who could also be viewed as the original Earth Day advocate. Francis' devotion to God was expressed through his love for all of God's creation. St. Francis cared for the poor and sick, he preached sermons to animals, and praised all creatures as brothers and sisters under God. Well I believe so and I will tell you why. We are still constantly being reminded of Saints and their impact within our world today. St Francis had formed many traditions and changes to the Christian culture. In 179, Pope John Paul ll paid tribute to Francis’ love for creation by declaring hine the patron saint of ecologists. In a subsequent speech, the pope encouraged Catholics around the world to follow the example of Saint francis by embracing all creatures as members of a single family and by offering respect, dignity and care to each family member. We even have a feast day for him which is on the 3rd of October. He was a major influence to everyone and traditions we still celebrate. St Francis had also created the first living nativity scene in the village of Greccio in 1223. It contained an altar which was used for christmas Mass and was designed with sculptures of Jesus’ birth. It assisted the resident in defining the true meaning of Christmas as it would gather people together. Today is still does the same as St francis created it.
