LIFE OF HERLUIN, (VITA HERLUINI), by Gilbert Crispin (1045-1117) Analysis of lines 8-20, page 8 Gilbert Crispin (1045-1117), the author of the possible foundation narrative or pseudo-hagiography - from the Greek, meaning ‘holy writing’ - Vita Herluini, as it was originally titled in Latin, was a theologian, monk at the Abbey of Bec, and ultimately the Abbot of Westminster (1085). Consequently, Crispin spent much of his life in the Abbey of Bec, alongside Herluin and later on, Lanfranc, providing the inspiration behind the text. The document is believed to be dated towards the end of Crispin’s life, likely after 1078 and the death of Anselm, the Abbot of Bec, after Herluin’s death in 1078. Around this period in medieval history, hagiographies were a popular method of promoting the lives of saints, but as stated by Salih, they were ‘amongst the earliest English literature’ and ‘continued to flourish in the early sixteenth century.’…

The Life of Martin of Tours by Sulpicius Severus tells the story of St. Martin, a saint and bishop who was recognized by many for his dedication to God and his ability to perform miracles that converted the masses. Martin lives a life dedicated to the Christian faith and is characterized by an exceedingly humble path into Christian leadership, especially for a man so richly and divinely endowed with God’s grace and protection. Severus writes of St. Martin’s life with a great sense of importance and a belief that his subject has led a life worth recounting for the sake of demonstrating what a truly virtuous Christian life should look like. By creating an aggrandized account of St. Martin’s life, his supernatural piety, and his many miraculous…

As previously mentioned Edgar is the legitimate son of Gloucester and is to inherit his father's fortune before he fell victim to Edmunds manipulation. Although Edgar's story seems to be sympathetic and tragic it is truly just a direct result of Edgar's own foolishness. Throughout Edmunds manipulation of his brother Edgar, Edgar arrogantly never questions the legitimacy of his brothers claims. For example, when Edmund first manipulated Edgar, he convinced his brother that their father Gloucester was so enraged by him that he wanted to harm him. Being that Edgar does not recall doing anything to enrage his father, it would be logical that Edgar would be skeptical of his brother claims and even seek to resolve the issue.…

First, it is not appealing to be or be around a moral saint. The saint's dedication to other people leads to a life that lacks what Wolf considers 'necessary' aspects of human character. Moral saints cannot have personal interests since they cannot justify the human resources to non-moral activities, thus live very unbalanced lives. This is where the general discontent with moral saints begins since it conflicts with our egoistic, hedonistic nature. Moral saints in their commitment to constant morality must sacrifice their desires for the morally worth actions.…

Edgar is his beloved legitimate son, and Edmund is his illegitimate child: “But I have a son, sir, by order of the law, some year elder than this, who is yet no dearer in my account. Though this knave came saucily to the world, before he was sent for, yet was his mother fair, there was good sport at his making, and the whoreson must be acknowledged” (I.1.19-24).This predefined outline of the relationship between father and son greatly troubles Edmund. Edmund believes that he should be viewed as an equal, or even superior to Edgar in the eyes of his father. However, due to his status of being born out of wedlock, prevents him from being viewed as an equal. This discrepancy in status inspires Edmund to conspire against his brother: “Let me, if not by birth, have lands by wit with all with me’s meet that I can fashion fit” (I.2.191-192).…
