Augustine, a Saint for Our Times.

Today we see that selfishness is one of the biggest impediments for some people becoming a member of the Church. We see day in and day out that some people in this age are self-absorbed and self-important. They care for no one, but themselves and their personal gratification. This gratification comes in many forms, but the most prevalent is sex in this hookup culture that we live in. This is exactly why Saint Augustine is a saint for our day. Saint Augustine was exactly the same way 1600 years ago and thus knows the internal struggles, the longing and the grief. Saint Augustine’s mother prayed for years for his conversation and eventually Saint Augustine, himself stated to pray for his own conversation.

Throughout history there has been some very unhealthy infatuations with sexuality and the objectification of the naked human body. Unfortunately, over that last five decades we have been introduced to the notion of, porn on demand. Starting in December of 1953, anyone over 18 could go out and buy “Playboy” magazine and within a blink of an eye be looking at naked women. Over the next five decades more and more magazines came out with photos more explicit then the last. During the 1960s the pornography film industry started taking off and by the 1970s was in full swing. With all the technology advancements we have seen in the last twenty years, you no longer need to go out to buy your pornography, the internet brings it right into our homes all day, every day. Just do an innocent “Google” search and click on images, I am sure there will be a person in a provocative pose, a naked image or a sexual act. Fifteen years ago and before, we needed to go out of our way to find this type of material, but now we need to go out of our way to avoid it. This is what brought about our hook-up culture where everyone is sleeping with everyone. We have made it ok to objectify each other for our own
