Saint Anthony was born in 1195 to a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal. He was born with the name Fernando Martins, but later changed his name to Anthony (“St. Anthony of Padua”). Although he joined the Augustinian order first, five Franciscans’ adventures to martyrdom in Morocco inspired Anthony to join the Franciscans. He then sailed to Morocco to spread God’s word. Africa’s climate was rough on Anthony. He became ill and decided to sail back to Portugal (Glavich 73).

He was also declared a Doctor of the Church. St. Anthony’s body was found 336 years after his death. Since Anthony’s teachings were so pure, his tongue was found incorrupt (“Saint Anthony of Padua”). He is also often shown with a Bible and Infant Jesus because of a vision he once had. He is the patron saint of the poor, travelers, and Portugal. Horses and donkeys are also within his patronage area (Glavich 73). Anthony, though, is most well-known for finding lost items. One of Anthony’s students had stolen one of his books. The book contained notes and psalms to help him in his preaching, and Anthony began praying that the book would be returned. The thief soon returned it to him. We now look to St. Anthony for help when we misplace items. St. Anthony of Padua’s feast day is celebrated on June 13 (“Saint Anthony of Padua”).
