St. Ambrose was born around A.D. 338 in Trier, Germany and died in Milan, Italy in year 397. He ate daintily, dining only on Saturdays and Sundays and on festivals of celebrated martyrs. Ambrose lead himself to being recognized as holy or special by the Catholic Church by showing his courageousness after a massacre in Thessalonica. Theodosius, a man who considered himself as a good Christian emperor, sent armies that slaughtered thousands of innocent people in Thessalonica. At this time, Ambrose was acquainted with Theodosius for backing him up in the fight of Arianism. Even so, Ambrose stood up to Theodosius by officially excluding his participation from the Christian Church services and the sacraments until he repented.
Another example would be the Arian controversy after the Nicaea Council in 374 A.D. After the former Bishop of Milan died, Ambrose (as the governor of the city) decided to attend the election to prevent any bickering between the Nicene Church and the Arians. While giving a say, a boy from a crowd riot exclaimed “Ambrose, Bishop!”. This chant was then taken up by the whole assembly.
