Nevertheless, this “next step” is crucial, determining the direction of my future career in medicine. With the future in mind, I recognize the importance of past experience, as it will guide my growth as a medical student and future physician.
During this transitional period, I reflect upon the personal growth experienced throughout undergraduate. In the short interactions with SSoM professors, I experienced the same enthusiasm for education as the professors at Northwestern. The SSoM professors seemed to invest in their students through relationship, which in turn will produce competent doctors with a breadth of understanding. Therefore, I seek to build upon my undergraduate foundation by engaging in meaningful discovery of the human body with the professors and peers at SSoM. My hope is to emerge from the SSoM as a comprehensive doctor capable of tending to patient’s physical as well as spiritual and emotional needs. In considering my lifetime goals, I have to discuss my past experiences in order for the Admission Committee to have insight into my journey to achieve academic excellence with the ultimate goal of becoming a part of the medical community. As far as I can remember, I always wanted to be part of the medical community; I believe that this quest started from my mother’s womb. The reason for this statement is because my mother experienced two great losses during her pregnancy with me; the loss of her sister who passed away after a short-term battle with cancer, and the loss of her best friend to a fatal gunshot wound due to a long-term battle with domestic violence. I genuinely believe I felt my mother’s heartache and pain within during these difficult moments in her life. Even though such heartache and pain plagued my mother, she tells me that I was the gift she needed to survive these moments.…

I can say, undoubtedly, that my first year at The University of Alabama was one which taught me a great deal about myself. As an out-of-state student from Rhode Island, the transition from a relatively small high school to a large university was unmatched to anything in my life prior. While Freshman year naturally contained points of difficulty, I was able to overcome these obstacles and become more well rounded as a result. Upon graduation from Alabama, I hope to enroll in medical school where I wish to eventually pursue emergency medicine. Although I was initially uncertain of my academic abilities in such a distinctly new environment, I have since grown more confident of my competency at the University.…

Throughout my high school career, I became increasingly involved with youth volunteer groups such as Pathways of Central Ohio’s Youth Leadership Council of Licking County (YLC) and Mental Health America of Licking County’s Prevent Assault and Violence Education (P.A.V.E.). Due to my involvement in these groups, my mother recommended that I become a social worker, and after speaking to someone from my church who is a social worker, I am convinced that social work will allow me to utilize the skills I learned in these groups to improve the lives of others. I believe that there are many things that I can bring many things to the social work profession upon graduation. One important skill a social worker should have, especially to be an effective and competent communicator with their clients, is empathy. They should be able to see things as the clients do and help them improve their lives as they see so they can help themselves when the social worker is out of the picture.…
