RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The following recommendations would certainly assist the authorities of Sri Lanka Army to look after its disabled soldiers with much dignity.
a. The Authorities of Sri Lanka Army, together with the Ministry of Defence should initiate training programs aiming at developing the careers of disabled soldiers while in active service. These programs should have direct links with larger organizations which are willing to make job offers on their retirement.
b. Sri Lanka Army together with the authorities of financial sector should initiate programs to offer loans with lower interest rates to facilitate disabled soldiers to commence self-employments. This will motivate disabled …show more content…
Every citizen in this world are differently abled, and Sri Lanka Army should initiate programs to discover the talents of those disabled soldiers to get them trained in those specialized fields to give them confidence of their retirement even with disabilities.
f. Comprehensive and effective awareness programmes are to be conducted to educate the general public about disability related issues. It will lead society to respect and assist the disabled soldiers in humane.
g. Sri Lanka Army Directorate of Media, together with Ministry of Mass Media should educate general public positively on the disability issues while preserving pride, dignity and recognition of disabled soldiers.
h. Sri Lanka Army together with Ministry of Health, set up a new system for retired disabled soldiers to obtain medical facilities from the government hospitals with special consideration and priority.
i. Generally, all officers and soldiers are offered with one year salary to be reimbursed without any interests, when they retire from the service. This facility should be renewed and offer disabled soldiers three years’ salary to be reimbursed without any …show more content…
Undoubtedly, the Sri Lanka Army is considered as the largest government organization in Sri Lankan soil. Obviously, the GOSL has to reserve a gigantic budget each year to feed, accommodate, and remunerate its personnel. Aftermath of three decades prolonged war in 2009, Sri Lanka Army left with huge number of soldiers with numerous casualties and disabilities. Maintaining them with full benefits is difficult for the management of SLA, hence, it expects those soldiers to retire with pension as they complete the required period of time. However, the current trend is totally different from SLA expects as most of them need to retain in SLA for longer duration. As such, the researcher endeavoured to conduct this research to identify the reasons to this effect.
5. This research was based on a few research objectives and questions, hence a comprehensive literature review has been conducted by referring numerous books, journals, articles, PDF and World Wide Web to gather information related to the career development and retirement plans in order to identify the best practices available in and other military establishments in the world to maintain disabled soldiers in their armies.
