Squirrel Experiment

Improved Essays
Our hypothesis was that differing food sources will have an effect on a squirrel’s GUD, were a desirable food source will have a lower GUD compared to a less desirable food source. In short, the experiment successfully rejected the null hypothesis. There was a significant disparity between the foraging of peanuts vs sunflower seeds. The t-test test was able to provide a p-value that was statically significant. This shows that peanuts were the more eaten food source by squirrels in the area we tested. In the first three trials, squirrels continued foraging well past the elapsed time of the trial. This suggests that the squirrels didn’t reach the point of “giving up” in that foraging location. Additionally, in the same three trials, the squirrels …show more content…
The urban ecosystem has many external factors that can scare a squirrel or introduce other peanut foragers. Additionally, it would be beneficial to video the trials for accurate analysis and behavioral observation. These two points were the subject of the study, yet their results were analyzed instead of the act. Also, we had some weather issues during the week(s) of testing so we couldn’t place the trays out every day. This could have had an effect on the squirrels foraging the trays. The overall conclusion from this study is that peanuts were foraged more from squirrels than sunflower seeds. This study was important because it adds data to help determine a squirrel’s preferences toward all nuts/seeds. It also adds to the literature already on the effect food source on squirrel foraging. In future we could continue collecting data or we could compare peanuts to a different food source such as walnuts due to them being the most prominent food source in a squirrel’s diet (Young). It is clearly supported that squirrel foraging behavior is drastically affected by a desirable food source. The foraging behavior persisted through each trial as predicted. This shows that squirrels can have a basic understanding of cost – benefit analysis when foraging. It also can imply data pertaining to nut nutrition can be analyzed to determine: What is the most desirable nut a squirrel has in its

For the mutated trial, it will be about 7 generations, and for the baseline trial it will be up to 15 generations. The number of trials is a biologically important variable in this investigation as it determines the length of the which in turn determines how effective the investigation is in regards to whether the mutation has a significant impact or…

In this experiment we were trying to find out what liquid the gummy bears will grow the most in. Our hypothesis was the gummy bear in orange juice would grow bigger in length and in width. Our data did support our hypothesis because the gummy bear did grow the biggest in length and width in the orange juice. We observed the red cherry flavored gummy bears for two days. The orange juice gummy bear kept its bear shape, but colored the orange juice more yellow than orange.…

On today’s Mythbusters episode they were testing if a bug were to hit you at high speeds on a motorcycle could it kill you before you even hit the ground. The cast members that were on this experiment were Tory Belleci, Grant Imahara, and Jessi Combs. They first started by going to see a physician Dr. Billy Trolan to ask if there was any way or pressure points on the body where an insect could hit and actually killed you before you hit the ground. They were then shown a chart and it showed them how much pressure it takes for something to kill a person instantly.…

Population Growth Lab Populations of different species interact with their environment in a myriad of ways. This may also impact the population, especially concerning its size. The question trying to be answered was how changes in the amount and nature of the plant life available in an ecosystem does, in fact, influence herbivore population growth over time. Answering this question will determine which environmental factor has the greatest impact on the population growth of herbivores. In this lab the herbivores, are rabbits, and the plant life is grass and weeds.…

    Primate Parenting Style

Primate parenting has been credited as one of the most unique parenting style of any mammal. Primates offer not only love and nourishment for their offspring but support as well. As opposed to other mammals such as the shrew, who just gives birth to the offspring and besides nourishment does not give any love and compassion; primates teach their offspring learned and instinctual traits. Primates are some of the most protective parents within the animal kingdom because of their temper, which stems from their close and personal connection to their offspring. Within the primate “food chain” there are six types of residence patterns that are attributed with reproduction.…

The Scopes trial, often called the Monkey Trial, was, and still is one of the most controversial trials in our country's history. The trial addressed evolution which, under The Butler Act, was illegal to teach. A Tennessee teacher taught a high school class evolution from a chapter in a previously state-approved textbook, after being approached by an organization. The Scopes trial was definitely more than just a debate between evolution and creationism, and though it would be hard, you could believe in both.…

Humans and primates share many similarities, in fact, such behaviors of humans are greatly reflected in primates. Even though, there are still many primates in the wild the easiest way to observe primates is at a local zoo. For the purpose of observing two primates, I made a visit to Los Angeles Zoo on a very sunny day, September 4, 2016 at 1pm. My visit to the zoo was a quite exhausting one since the weather was almost 90 degrees and I was quite hungry.…

A trip to the zoo is always enlightening as no matter how long ago it was we last visited we can always forget something about the animals that live this world with us. Going to the zoo can remind us that we are creatures just like these animals, but also remind us that we are so much more than just animals. Our lives on the surface seem so much more complex than the primates around us, however if we could take the time to observe the lives and the emotions of the animals around us then maybe we can learn who they are, and maybe who we are. The primate that I picked was a mongooses lemur, native to Madagascar.…

Background information: Breathing: They breathe oxygen through gills. Gills are respiratory organs found in aquatic organisms, which allow the Yabby to remove the oxygen from the water for respiration. Each leg has a gill attached, with the movement of the legs helping the circulation of water over these gills. There is a thin layer of exoskeleton separating the gills from the body cavity, allowing water to cover the gills without getting inside the body.…

Without adequate nutrition the mother’s well-being is compromised and the infant endangered. Therefore, they need quality foods that contain energy that are readily available and are located within a small area (Larsen, 2011). For most primates is includes fruit, but also leaves, nuts, and insects.
