This written response will talk about what I've learned about squids, and what I knew before doing the dissection. Some cool things I learned about Squids is that they can weigh over 1000 pounds. I also learned that you can write with the inc inside of a squid. A Squid has 3 hearts. Also Squids have 8 arms with suckers all along them, and 2 tentacles that are longer. Squids also have a beak that they use for the mouth. Squids have a mantle cavity that contains gills, which they contain air from. Squids also have a siphon that is used to empty waste and help the squid swim.

At first, before I had dissected the squid, I only knew a few things. I knew how they looked and that they had arms and tentacles. I didn’t know how mant tentacles

Bullfrog Dissection Background The American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus, is an amphibian about the size of a teacup.(National Geographic, “American Bullfrog”). This dissection explored the anatomy of a bullfrog that had been pithed. Pithing is a technique used to prevent the frog from experiencing any cruel or unusual pain during the dissection. A pithed frog has had its nervous tissue in its brain severed thus allowing it to maintain normal bodily function during the dissection without having to endure the pain of the dissection.…

The Sea Lamprey is a dangerous and destructive fish for the great lakes ecosystem. This species feeds on a great lake fish and needs to be put under control in order to save fish populations in the great lakes and it needs to be stopped. One of the biggest problems with Sea Lamprey is that “Sea lamprey acts as parasitic and invasive species in each new habitat. It attacks and decreases the population of native fish and disturbs the natural balance of the ecosystem”(Softschools.com). An invasive species is a plant, fungus, or animal species that is not native to a specific location (an introduced species), and which has a tendency to spread to a degree believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy or human health the sea lamprey is just one of these invasive species.…

Before leaving for school, I sit down and turn on my favorite show, Spongebob Squarepants. In this episode, Spongebob is being bullied, an incident that many students like me and my friends can relate to, at Boating School by a larger fish named Flatts. Annoyed and frustrated, Spongebob lets the bully have his way, and since he is a sponge, the bully’s physical abuse doesn’t affect him, the bully becoming tired and run-down. During the whole episode, Spongebob stays strong which teaches the children who watch it to stay strong and take a stance if they are being bullied. Spongebob is only one of many Nickelodeon shows that teach children important life lessons.…

The Observational Octopus We’ve all heard some variation of a story in which an octopus has escaped its enclosure, gone about its business, and returned to its tank, all without leaving any evidence for the staff or guards. These types of tells are what piqued my interest in cephalopod intelligence and led me to a study conducted by James B. Wood and Roland C. Anderson where the goal was to identify the differences in escape behavior between various types of octopuses. When searching for an answer to such a question, it was essential to take into account the logistic and ethical limitations involved with the research. Obtaining large enough sample sizes of a dozen species of octopuses can prove difficult due to the fact that they do not typically…

Squids are fortunate enough to be very adaptable. Squids evolved from immobile mollusks. These mollusks had a “foot” which kept them where they needed to be. They evolved arms and tentacles stored in pouches with highly developed sense organs, including taste. Deep-sea squids have been described with “extremely developed beach ball eyes,” says Wendy Williams.…

These are creatures that evolved from a land species into dominate sea carnivores. Many have speculated on exactly what type of land creature the ichthyosaurs originally evolved from. Scientist believe that its origins are definitely reptile and belonged to a group called Diapsida, which includes lizards, dinosaurs, and crocodiles (Motani, 2000).…
