Have you ever felt like the internet is a dangerous place for you to be on? As a parent should you use a spyware to monitor your child? Coben’s claim is that parents should use spyware to monitor their child; the internet is also a dangerous place to be on. In my opinion parents shouldn’t use spyware to monitor their children because as a child is growing they are learning. The internet is not a dangerous place to be unless you search up something bad. At this point I disagree and agree with Coben. I’m not saying as your child is growing up to not monitor them. As a parent it is your job to be responsible of your child. I stated that parents shouldn’t use spyware to monitor their children because as a child is growing they are learning. Yes, they are learning as they are growing but your job as a parent is to keep your child on track and being successful with education. As a child you are …show more content…
He supported his claim by bringing reality to the situation, for example, like the young boy unknowingly conversing with a pedophile or the girl who was cyberbullied to the point she committed suicide. In this case I somehow disagree and agree with this situation. Well, the internet is not really a dangerous place because that’s where students use to learn and have fun with. Children’s wouldn’t be able to search anything bad up unless someone or somebody told them. Social media is a dangerous place to be because there are many strangers out there in the world that are bad. Just like what people say you should know who they are first before accepting the friend request. Maybe the stranger can be a hacker and hack through your profile. People can lie about who they are and will make you think you know them. Parents if your children is creating a page on social media make sure they are not doing anything wrong either they are the bullies or not. If they are the bully teach a lesson on why being a bully is bad

In his essay “Undercover Parent,” Harlan Coben supports the idea of using spyware on teenager’s electronics by parents. Using this spyware you have the ability to “log every keystroke your child makes” (2) and invading their private space. While this idea is valid because most parents who do this are loving and only want to protect their children from harm, by placing this spyware on a teen’s electronics you are not only evading their privacy but also their trust. This is because more than likely parents are doing this behind the child’s back, which could ultimately lead to distrust and resentment due to the lack of trust in the teen to be able to make their own decisions. However, spyware on computers would, in fact, help to prevent situations…

In the article or Op-Ed "The Undercover Parent" (2008), Harlan Coben asserts that parents should install spyware on their children’s computer to keep them monitored from everything they are doing online and to protect them from harmful people and websites. The article supports this claim by using counterarguments to take the other side of the idea and then later rebutting them with examples supporting it back to his argument. Coben wants parents to install spyware for their children to keep them safe from the harm and dangers of the internet. The author tries to convince parents that it is a great and easy tool that will keep their children safe and that they should consider talking to their children first about it before installing it. The…

In “The Undercover Parent,” a newspaper article written by Harlan Coben (in March 16, 2008), Coben insists that parents install spyware on their children’s computer, but to use it only to a specific level. He argues that parents should have this software to make sure that their kids are guarded and that they are not contacting with anyone that may cause them any harm. However, he also understands that parents should not use it to find out personal information or to read the gossip that happens at school. He supports his points by giving many real life examples and connecting them to what parents care about most: their children’s safety. I have come to agree with Coben’s position as I also believe that parents should have this software because…

Harlan Coben’s OpEd piece “The Undercover Parent” is a powerful piece written to convince parents that the benefits of spyware greatly outweigh the invasion of privacy. Throughout his essay, he maintains a friendly, parent-to-parent tone that one can compare to a conversation over coffee. As a college student without children, I found it difficult to understand the importance of monitoring children’s internet activities. However, when I forced myself to take on the perspective of a parent, I found Coben’s argument to be far more compelling, and found myself understanding the importance of spyware on computers that children have access to. In his article, Coben assumes that readers will have a negative response to the concept of spyware, but he uses his argument effectively to persuade the reader that spyware is not only harmless, but an asset in the toolbox of good parents.…
