Sprout Conversations

This year has been my first year participating in Global Girls and I can, without hesitation, say that several of the conversations held during the meetings have been some of the most honest, crisp discussions I have taken a part in. My personal belief in the great significance of these kinds of conversations is one of the driving factors for my interest in being co head of Global Girls. If selected as co-head, I will really focus on creating more of these organic conversations that speak about the core of an issue. The importance of brisk, articulate conversations was really emphasized to me during my participation in the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in December of last year. I was chosen, along with four other Brearey girls, to go to this conference in Atlanta, Georgia and I had the privilege of engaging in conversations with teenagers from around the country about different social …show more content…
Once the source of a problem is understood (regardless of whether it is to the fullest extent), then it is much easier to identify and fully understand the nuances. As co head, I will try to apply this approach to discussions within the club when talking about of the bevy of problems women around the world have to face. I will also try to extend the conversations held within the club to all of the upper school grades through the members of the club. One program I would like to initiate would involve each club member introducing a topic (to their liking) from one of the recent meetings to their grade once a month and then fostering a conversation within their grade. This will allow for a broader awareness of certain issues throughout the whole student body and advocate for feminist activism for all Brearley

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

We live in boxes. Constructed by learned perspectives and solidified by societal pressures, their existence is ubiquitous. At my school, the divisiveness of these partitions is powerful: hatred among my peers is developed from the inability to unlearn prejudices in order to understand the circumstances of others. As Vice President of Sister Cities of Durham, an organization dedicated to fostering global cultural understanding, I strive to bridge cultural gaps by giving the students in my city an opportunity to deconstruct these mental confines. From creating school-wide fundraising events for well building in Arusha, Tanzania to hosting and conferencing with exchange students from Denmark and Japan, I spearhead efforts to diversify and aid both my community and those abroad.…

On Being a Therapist by Jeffrey Kottler is an educational piece of literature that also happens to be very informative and interesting. In the book, he discusses numerous aspects of being a therapist, ranging from how one decides to engage in this work, how therapists can change clients, how clients can change therapists, to the difficulties and struggles therapists frequently face. As someone who hopes to become a therapist someday, this book was a really incredible way of learning about the profession in a more subjective and ultimately real way. Not all he says is comforting, but his choice to discuss both the good, bad, and in between have given me a more thorough understanding of what I may experience in the future. Throughout this book, Kottler discusses many subjects that have connected…

A study by Reed (2012) examined how the intersectionalities of race and gender influence the practices of three black public secondary school administrators. Reed used Bloom’s and Erlandson’s (2003) four assumptions on Black feminist epistemology—the blending of people’s history and lived experience, commonalities within lived experience, the variance within standpoints, and the non-existence of a universal identification of oppression of black women—as a theoretical framework to organize her findings. The participants revealed not only their encounters with various challenges but also how they navigated those challenges based on their gender and race positions. Reed found that the three black female participants faced the minimization of their power because of their gender and age, none had experienced being mentored by a black female principal, and her participants’ response to oppression usually involved “creative insubordination.” In adding to the literature…

The two organization groups I have chosen to research are V-DAY and Women’s Education Project (WEP); both encourage striving for better and more confident lifestyles. V-DAY is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls, whether that has to do with rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sex slavery. The members of V-DAY spread aware by raising money, creating events and revitalize existing anti-violence organizations. The Women’s Education Project is also an amazing organization that sends women whose families live on less than $1.50 a day in India to college. WEP not only send their students to college, but also provides each one of them with tuition for books, transportation, libraries, computer labs and different leadership programs.…

    Anti-Feminist And Change

The discussion that I led for Challenge and Change on Friday, March 11th was about the anti-feminist movement and how modern feminism is perceived. I honestly believed that it was an excellent discussion and almost everyone was quite vocal about their opinions on both feminism in general and the article we were discussing. One thing I liked was how when I would ask a thought-provoking question to the class, the discussion would either change or go in a direction I didn’t expect at first. I think this is because we have highly intelligent students in the class, who enjoy contributing in discussion settings. For example, when someone brought up the legalisation of rape movement and I decided to ask a question to the class about it, so…

The truth is, global citizenship is difficult. It’s challenging as humans in an industrialized country to look past our daily routines, minor inconveniences, and allegiances to family/friends to step back and realize our small, yet powerful position on the global tapestry. Global citizenship arises from the moral awareness of an individual civic duty to our peers across boundaries of political, social, and economic divides. As an LBGT+ student in a reserved conservative town, I’m enabled with the power to directly influence my peers and community through vocal and outreach activism in my school.…
