The cycle of life is well known. There is a period in which we are all reliant upon third parties to aid in our survival. Eventually, we grow and, in most cases, provide the support for another’s survival, just as had been done for us. Some things, like flowers, have seen their uses evolve, from art to medicine to how we use them today; that use, of course, is display. As most Valentine’s Day consumers can confirm, a florist’s product may not be the longest lasting gift that is available. There are things that people think can influence how long these particular flowers live, things that can be altered in order to prolong the life of these cut flowers. Among many of these ideas, there is the notion that Sprite is able to create suitable conditions …show more content…
Its original name was Fanta Klare Zitrone, or “Clear Lemon Fanta”. The Coca-Cola Company introduced the product to Americans in 1961, hoping to make it a viable competitor to 7-Up. Being that Coke had an impressive system of bottlers, and a tremendous amount of marketing capability, Sprite replaced 7-Up as the leading brand of lemon-lime soda in 1989. Sprite’s ingredient list reads thusly: carbonated water (water that has had carbon dioxide gas has been dissolved), high fructose corn syrup (a corn-derived sweetener), citric acid (an organic acid that is used as a flavoring agent), natural flavors (flavors that are not chemically-derived, but obtained from plants and animals), sodium citrate (sodium salt of citric acid) , sodium benzoate (preservative). Some of these, such as high fructose corn syrup, have become infamous for their negative health effects. Most of the ingredients have been linked to tooth decay, weight gain, diabetes, and other serious health …show more content…
The United States also began cut flower production in the 1700s, using the same greenhouse procedures already established by the Netherlands. The availability and concentration of cut flowers was greatly improved with the advent of the airplane and refrigerator. Even though the flower is cut, it still performs photosynthesis, and still needs some things in order to live; such as: water, some type of food/sugar, and an environment capable of supporting it that is also marginally clean. Slightly acidic water can actually be beneficial, as it allows an improved water uptake.
Most cut flowers live for an average of 7-10 days with some living even longer than that. This poses a problem of financial irresponsibility. The cost of these flowers often calls into question whether or not the investment is worth the short payoff period. If people are able to find ways to maximize the lifespan of cut flowers, then it will become more practical to buy them year in and year out, giving florists a constant and loyal consumer base, while the consumer is satisfied with the overall

In Toni Morrison’s novel, Song of Solomon, the theme of flowers is significant for the female characters. Ruth Dead identifies herself as “small’ like flowers and her daughters, Lena and Corinthians identify with artificial rose petals. Many people assume that flowers are beautiful, delicate and need love and care in order to grow. In the novel, these characteristics of flowers are used to identify gender norms for women because flowers represent femininity. Morrison uses flowers to symbolize the oppression experienced by the female characters, Ruth, Lena, and Corinthians, three women who live in a male dominant household.…

Universally accepted as symbols of beauty, flowers are often used to symbolize love. Although beautiful, they are of a delicate nature that can only survive temporarily in this world. Often people observe their magnificence in the seclusion of gardens, where they are rarely left to grow freely. Contained within flowers are manifold functional uses, but their purpose is confined to being observed for their beauty, much like what was expected of women. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, a man investigates a peculiar death several years after it has occurred.…

When flowers or plants are sensitive to climate and may not be suitable to the climate in which it is sold, the retailer definitely maintains the responsibility to alert customers of the growing conditions prior to purchase. Like all products, adequate disclosure remains necessary on the flowers. A reasonable consumer would assume, that if not told otherwise and based on past experiences with the Palles’ flower shop, that the flowers were locally grown and would fit their geographic climate. The purpose of buying flowers is to grow them and nurture them. Knowledge of that purpose and expectation requires the assumption of growth.…
