The United States also began cut flower production in the 1700s, using the same greenhouse procedures already established by the Netherlands. The availability and concentration of cut flowers was greatly improved with the advent of the airplane and refrigerator. Even though the flower is cut, it still performs photosynthesis, and still needs some things in order to live; such as: water, some type of food/sugar, and an environment capable of supporting it that is also marginally clean. Slightly acidic water can actually be beneficial, as it allows an improved water uptake.
Most cut flowers live for an average of 7-10 days with some living even longer than that. This poses a problem of financial irresponsibility. The cost of these flowers often calls into question whether or not the investment is worth the short payoff period. If people are able to find ways to maximize the lifespan of cut flowers, then it will become more practical to buy them year in and year out, giving florists a constant and loyal consumer base, while the consumer is satisfied with the overall
