In “What is the Safest Sprint Starting Position for American Football Players?” by the authors Bruno Bonnechere , Benoit Beyer, Marcel Rooze and Jan Serge Van Sint studied concussions in football at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. Their objective was to evaluate the safety of the three sprint starting positions. The lack of safety in American Football has caused many athletes to receive concussions. Concussions have been linked with, “[I]nduc[ing] neuropsychological and cognitive changes years after trauma,” (Bonnechere, Beyer, Rooze and Sint, 2014). Concussions are a serious issue; through studying sprint starting positions, a consensus about which sprint starting position is the safest can be made. The scientists used twenty-five men who were in good physical shape. Twelve of those men were football players and thirteen of those men were not football players. Field of view and kinetic energy were tested for in each of the three positions.
The authors concluded that the two point stance is the safest stance. The players start at an upright position in the two point stance, giving the players a better field of view from the beginning of the play.
