Springfield High School Case Study

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 devastated the south with a massive wipeout of New Orleans. Ten years later what has been left in ruins continues to impact the rest of Louisiana. Being from a minute school certainly had the advantages a student would enjoy going to. Small classrooms along with small class sizes made teaching and learning possible. With that came achievement and recognition; the school was given the “Award of Excellence.” These two events have influenced one massive issue. After the hurricane many people left New Orleans to find new homes thus being mainly on the North Shore of Louisiana: minor flooding, close to New Orleans, and safe. As students began to enroll in Springfield schools, overcrowding became a problem. With nowhere to place these …show more content…
Building a new school to place the hundreds of students in Springfield High School would be a solution to this massive problem. As class sizes flourish from an average of sixty-five students to over one-hundred it starts to put a strain not only on the students but the teachers as well. With a class room ratio one to thirty-five it is incredibly hard to get a classroom of students to obey and be disciplined a whole fifty minutes, six hours a day. Teachers have really given up on the duties of being a teacher because of the strain it is putting on them. Not only has the school had to take away parking from students but they have had to put portable building in the teachers parking to accommodate this year’s class. Building a new school would not only be beneficial to students and teachers but to this growing community.
