Pastoral Reflection: The last 6 months of Pastoral Year has been a great blessing. The people in the Parish received me with such love and care. It will certainly be hard to step away in 3 months time when the Pastoral Year ends. During this Pastoral Year, I have gotten to really know a lot of people in the Parish, some closer than others. A couple that I got to know real well is the Bernard and Rosemarie Scheiff. They treat me like their own son. They would sit in front of the Rectory to deliver me food. They offered to help with decorating the Rectory for Christmas and special occasions. During Sister Mary’s visit, they cooked a nice dinner for us. I want to know how we could get them to be more faith to Sunday Mass and to fill the confessional rooms. The one sad thing about Los Altos is that sports are more important than faith. Families often skip Weekend Mass for soccer game and practices. I picked up a book called, “Keeping your Kids Catholic: It may seem Impossible but it can be done.” In this book, the author provides technique to help the kids to become more engaged with their faith. Instead of forcing the kids to go to Mass, we should help them understand and internalize their faith. Faith must start in the home, the parents must help the kids pray and share their faith experience with them. In other words, how can we become a dynamic Catholic in this day and time? In order to become a dynamic Catholic, one must began a daily routine of prayer. This must continue each day; the person must discipline himself or herself. In the long run, the person will begin to recognize the graces that are poured over them. The person will begin to experience the power of prayer.
Each individual must learn how to deal with silence, how to be open to God and how to listen to his will. In this day and age, silence is difficult for many people. Also, we live in a time where many people show opposition to the Church teaching. The problem is that the people are not properly catechized; therefore, they do not quite understand what the Church teaches. Kelly’s book encourages Catholics to start by reading a Catholic book and asking the questions why? Why does the Church teach the way it teaches? All one need to do is to read five pages everyday (Kelly
