"Spring Offensive" by Wilfred Owens
In the poem, "Spring Offensive", Owens described what occurs before, during, and after a battle in World War I. He explained how war was waged, the attitude toward the actions of the Church, and how war and serenity can switch quickly between each other. The poem started off in a calm valley, but from the beginning, there was an ominous feeling. The wind blew the grass like waves and the insects fluttered from blade to blade, but the soldiers were tense as they waited for the call to move out. The poem shifted to a battle with the sky red as fire and bullets that whizzed past until the soldiers got through. "Spring Offensive" perfectly described how war is. War is not like a video game where a person gets shot and restart with another chance. Soldiers rushed into battle knowing that they may not return home. They saw the deaths of their comrades and some do not come back with physical wounds, but the psychological ones were devastating. Owens revealed that soldiers has this perpetual fear of death and it can come for them at any moment. Also during this time, the Church played a big part in the war. It provided relief for the soldiers and gave them something to fight for. The soldiers were not too fond of the Church, because

The war was raging on the Wilfred Owens was in the center of it. He faced enemies head on and he knew first hand who war was like. To him, the war was seen as a glorious event to protect the country, but in reality it was a bloodbath of misery and pain. It was also seen as God 's will to show how great the country is. The Church helped make the war as honorable in the name of God. The soldiers did not approve of the Church because the men did not participate in the battle. They just stayed back and preached that men should go battle and die for God. Overall, the poems shows how war really is and how the Church glorified the massacre taking

The picture shows the graphic intensity of war. This is a picture of a man who has been gassed, presumably by Cl2. Cl2 was a gas used by both sides that irritated the eyes, lungs, and skin; it is a very nasty gas that is lethal and toxic. The man is lying on a stretcher, he has been shot, and it looks like he has been shot multiple times as spots of deep color are shown on his clothes. These dark spots look similar to an entry wound that blood is pouring out of.…

This one was chosen because it was very different from all the other poems written. Everything that has been wrote in this poem is about war. He says how he feels and what the war does to him but also how much he misses home and what he wishes to do for the people back where he comes from. He also explains what the war is like not just mentally but also physically and emotionally. Imagining what soldiers see in war is harsh because even in present time if they make it out they don’t want to be alive.…

No soldiers disobeyed this command and had full trust in their commander. As they continued on they were shot, but this did not stop them from persevering. They used their swords to fight, but they were outnumbered; only a few men survived. This shows the soldier’s loyalty to their commander. This poem is similar to “At Woodward’s Gardens” because it focuses on the story, both have a discrete message.…

There are sudden mood changes that occur throughout the poem. The most effective is from the first stanza to the second stanza. In the first stanza the soldiers are slowly walking along, tired, and hurt. In the second stanza, a sudden gas attack occurs and action begins to take place. Owen uses figurative language to produce harsh images relating to the brutalities of war.…

Slessor further establishes a stark contrast in tone from the first half of the poem through the application of onomatopoeia in, “the sob and clubbing of the gunfire”. Conjuring images of violence and death, the harsh sounds in this phrase allow the reader to comprehend how it is the death from gunfire which relieves the soldiers from the futility of war. Also the comma in that quote again leaves a small gap between, (“In the old times”) and (“before he threw away his knees”) which again stresses the gap and again increases the anti-climax. He also uses a hyphen here, “He thought he’d better join – He wonders why.” (Line 24) Again Owen is creating an anti-climax but he is trying to stress the fact that the veteran feels as if he lost his limbs for nothing…

Even a century long time after his death, Wilfred Owen is still famous for his war poetry written during World War 1. In his poem, Owen uses various language techniques to vividly illustrate the horrendous reality of the war. Hence, he communicates his own anti-war feelings implied beneath his techniques. However, although he is now known as an anti-war poet, for once, he had been a naive boy, who had volunteered to fight in war. At first, he was thrilled to fight for one’s country.…
