Whisperings: an Analysis
There are always constant whisperings, persistent reminders on how people are to behave and the consequences of doing otherwise. Spring Awakening’s Whisperings captures the hidden thoughts from someone who is alone. Constantly reminds, how the newer generation is more accepting and more eager to learn. Each decision the artist made serves a purpose. The imagery adds emotions and visuals to the already melodic song. The symbols deliver elements that are done so beautifully. Personification and rhyming impacts each lyric. The word choice reflects the inner struggle the character is going through. Lyrics aren’t just meant to be sung, but interpreted and theorized. Wendla, a teenage girl, lives in the late 1800’s Germany. The parent child relationship is poor and Wendla has no way to figure out what is happening to her and around her. Until, she meets a boy. Making each line have multiple interpretations of what the meaning could be. “Hear the ghosts in the moonlight Sorrow doing a new dance” (line 2-3) This town has been so isolated and reserved, no one has ever done something that this before. Personification brings life to the sorrow, displaying a new routine it has not done before. “Fumbling mutely with their rude hands And there's heartache without end”(line 7-8) Sex is a new experience, curiosity takes over and the mind becomes dormant. Resulting in things that will become regrettable and consequently. Throughout the ages, sex has been categorized as wrong and disgusting. “Went and ruined all the true plans Such a shame, such a sin.” (line 15-16) Adam and Eve were the first presumably the first people on this earth. They were cherished until they betrayed God and he banished him. Since, the town is living in the past, it is no wonder the artist chose to relate it to the first biblical
