Wendla doesn’t know how she got pregnant because her mother never told her how a child is created. Her mother slaps her, but in all reality the mother should have told the child the actual truth on how a child is born. The mother then goes and talks to a man about an abortion. The mother knows the risks but continues with the abortion. The scene changes and Melchior is reading a letter from Wendla saying to meet her at the grave yard. Melchior goes to the grave yard and sees Moritz Grave stone, he also sees a new stone and notices it says Wendla. That is the moment we notice Wendla died from the abortion. Melchior has a break down and hears Moritz voice singing to him, he then tries to kill himself but then hears Wendla’s voice also singing to him. Moritz and Wendla voices talk him out of killing himself and how they will always be with him. Spring Awakening ends with the song “The Song of Purple Summer” where the whole cast joined together which I thought was a good ending.
Over all, I enjoyed the musical Spring Awakening. I thought it portrayed how religion was so strict during this time well. It also opens people’s eyes to show that there are students, parents, and teachers who go through life experiences like this and that if we are very open about everything including sex then we can work through these situations. I enjoy the theater as well, although it was small, the way it was set up was like you were part of the show being only 3 feet away from the actors. I would be willing to see another musical with The Barn Stage Company
